When Should Someone Pay Their Spine Surgeon a Visit?

ByTamara H. Thomas

Most people with back pains should always go to their doctor. However, some conditions causing back pains need to be looked at by spine surgeons. This is because they are specialists who have been trained to treat any condition associated with the spine.

These spinal conditions are either caused by diseases or accidents which exert a lot of pressure on the spine. The undue pressure on the spine may cause slippage of discs or vertebrae, disc fracturing or other conditions.

The conditions for which people need to have checked out by a spine surgeon include degenerative disc disease (DDD), disc fractures, stenosis, spinal instability and bulging of discs among others.

A spine surgeon should be able to explain the range of treatments that are available for a patient. If the condition is not serious, the surgeon may recommend physical therapy.

If physical therapy is not suitable, the spine surgeon may suggest that the patient takes medication for their condition. The medication is usually narcotic pain relievers. The problem with this kind of medication is that it is usually very expensive.

If neither physical therapy nor narcotic medication works, the patient can ask their spine surgeon about possible surgical options. Ordinarily, there are two types of spine surgeries that can be performed. The first type is open spine surgery and the second type is minimally invasive spine surgery.

It is important to know that the minimally invasive spine surgery is more advanced. As such, it is safer compared to the open spine surgery. In addition, patients recover much faster if they undergo this procedure.

The spine surgeon should tell their patient that spine surgeries are conducted with some risk to the patient. The success of the procedure is not guaranteed. For the spine surgery to be considered successful, it must do away with the spine condition or greatly reduce the pain or discomfort or risk it has on the patient.

A spine surgery is considered unsuccessful when it does not change the condition that afflicts the patient. A spinal surgery is also considered unsuccessful if it causes more harm to the patient.

There is however a number of things that a spine surgeon may suggest for their patients to help alleviate the pain. If someone is overweight for instance, it may be suggested that they try losing some weight to relieve the pressure exerted on their spine.

The surgeon may also suggest that the patient ought to start exercising and stop smoking. It's possible that they might recommend avoiding strenuous activities and always assuming the correct body posture when working. While the other three options are supposed to help reduce the strain on the spine, quitting smoking will reduce the chances of an individual developing hardened artery. The hardening of arteries causes the development of the degenerating disc disease.

Whatever the degree of acuteness of the pain in someone's back, they should always consider seeing a medical doctor first to diagnose the problem. If the doctor suggests that the person sees a spine surgeon, they should take that advice seriously as spine issues can seriously affect someone's daily lifestyle.
