What Are Some of the Most Common Spinal Issues?

ByTamara H. Thomas

Spinal issues are common problems that afflict millions of people across the globe. These people always experience pain in the back which makes it impossible for them to go about their daily business as usual.

These spinal issues are caused by a number of factors. While some of these pains are due to physical activity, others are because of medical conditions. These conditions can cause a lot of pain and if anyone is suffering from these, they should seek treatment as soon as possible. Here is some of the common condition that could affect someone:

Degenerative disc disease: When the spinal discs start to thin, harden or dry, this can cause someone a lot of discomfort and pain. Degenerative disc disease (DDD) can be caused by aging, putting undue stress on the spine or sickness.

Fractures: Individuals with conditions that make them have weak bones are most at risk of having fractures in their spines or having them broken. In addition, individuals who strain their backs so much can also be severely affected. These fractures are very painful and they should be avoided if and when possible.

Stenosis: This is a condition that makes the spine narrow. When the canal inside has narrowed, the nerves inside are strained causing the individual a lot of pain.

Disc herniation: This is similar to stenosis. However, this condition leads to compression of the nerve roots which is not only painful but also causes the numbing of feet.

Bulging of discs: Sometimes, spinal discs bulge or move towards the nerves. This usually irritates the nerves in the spinal canal causing a lot of pain.

Spinal instability: This condition results when the discs in the spine move from the positions, temporarily or permanently. This movement or slippage can interfere with nerves thus irritating them.

The conditions mentioned above can cause individuals a lot of pain and discomfort. In order to avoid these spine issues, it's wise not to put a lot of pressure on the back as this may cause or worsen these conditions.

It is also important that everyone should have checkups from time to time from their doctor. It will then be possible to detect any of these conditions early and save an individual a great deal of pain and discomfort.

Doctors also encourage people to exercise regularly. Frequent exercise will strengthen the bones and muscles and save the spine from damage. Regular exercise will also make someone become more fit and healthy. It is a common excuse of many people in today's world that they do not have time for exercise. They should not make it a hobby to find excuses. At least one can always walk some distance to or from work or use the stairs instead of the elevators or lifts.

Someone should also inform their physician of any pain they may have in their back. Although some people take pain relievers to deal with these pains, they are not encouraged to do this. Patients should get checked as and when they experience any pain in their back. They should let the doctor decide the medication or therapy that is most appropriate. This is a sure way of ensuring that they are not courting any spinal issues.
