Lower Back Exercises - Your Keys to Love Handle Reduction and Back Pain Prevention

The lower back is often a concerning injury prone area for many people, and a lot of the problems are due to a weakness of the core, particularly the lower back muscles. In men particularly, fat has a tendency to gather as 'love handles' around the lower abdomen, and lower back areas. This is a very good indication that there is not much muscle in that area, since if there was a lot of muscle, fat would be a lot less likely to build up in that area, due to the muscles requirement for calories for energy.

Don't misunderstand - you cannot just build up your core by itself, and do no other exercises and expect the fat in the midriff to disappear - it won't, simply because there needs to be a demand for calories from the whole body, so that it then takes that energy from the localized area around the core. Let me illustrate - how many people have you seen with massively muscular limbs that are also very fat? It doesn't happen - the fact simply collects in places where the demand is lower.

Our sedentary lives do not require us to use our core and lower body generally, and due to this fact, we build up fat in these areas, as well as creating problems such as back aches, pinched nerves, slipped disks and other debilitating injuries that may be avoided with a muscular core from using lower back exercises and core exercises.

In conjunction with an effective lean muscle-building program, using whole body workouts, plenty of compound exercises, a good diet and high intensity, performing lower back exercises and core exercises will really burn away the fat in that area. Strengthening this area of your body will also mean that you will find day-to-day tasks much easier, and you may also feel as though you have a lot more energy, because these muscles do not fatigue quite as easily.

You can focus in this area if it is particularly weak, but once it becomes stronger, you must target it as part of full body workouts, rather than trying to isolate the area. In this way, all the supporting muscles get a chance to become equally as strong, and any functional movement can then become easier.

Before we get into some suggestions for lower back exercises - you should go and see a chiropractor if you have problems in this area, as your spine may also be out of alignment due to the weakness, and you would not want to cause any damage, and seeing such a professional is likely to make you feel much better and lead to long-term solutions. We will assume here that you do not have chronic pain, because if you do, it is better than you see a chiropractor or medical professional to ask advice.

So what sorts of lower back exercises can you do that will strengthen your back and core?

Bridge where you lie on your back with your feet on the floor, and push your hips up in the air until your hamstrings and abdomen form a straight line. Hold this position if you can do
Plank - Toes and hands in contact with the floor, in a push up position, hold for as long as you can, with your back straight, and your abdominal muscles tight and pulled in. Your back should not sag as you do this. If this is too hard try dropping to your elbows - the exercise should be performed in exactly the same way
Side Plant - Lie on your side, with your elbow and forearm on the floor, your feet together, and the side of one foot on the floor. Straighten your body so that it forms a straight line from foot to shoulder, and hold. Perform a few holds, and repeat for the other side of the body, on the opposite elbow and foot
Knee to elbow plank - This is a more advanced version of the above. Hold the plank in a push up position, then move your right knee to your left elbow, touch and back to the start position. Swap to the left knee, and right elbow. Do this exercise as fast as you are able, and make sure that your back stays strong - you can slightly stick your butt up for this one, as that will also engage the abdominal muscles a little more
Prone Cobras - Laying on your stomach, with your arms above your head, slowly lift your head and bend back, as your simultaneously move your hands back, keeping your arms straight, so that you end up in something like a crucifix position on your front, but with your arms as far back as you are able and your back arched and shoulders up and back
Bicycle crunches - make bicycle movements with your legs, as your upper body turns first left, elbow touching right leg, then right elbow touching left leg. This is a great exercise that will increase your strength in your oblique muscles as well as your abdominal muscles too
Resistance band rotation - Using a resistance band held on the left on your body, rotate your trunk to the right with your arms straight holding the resistance band handle. Perform sets for both sides of the body
Straight legged deadlift - with your legs straight, hold onto a barbell or dumbbells, with the weight at your shins, keeping the weights in contact with the shins, slide upward, keeping the back stretched, and the abdominal muscles tight. This is likely to be uncomfortable if you are arching your back - aim to stick your butt out as this will help you to keep your back straight and avoid the discomfort
Deadlifts - This is a generally great exercise to be able to do once you have strength in your lower back. Do not attempt to do this exercise if your feel discomfort in your lower back. It means that you are probably arching your back - instead strengthen your back with the other lower back exercises, particularly the stiff-legged deadlift, until this becomes comfortable, as your back is able to stay straight.

Having a strong lower back through lower back exercises is going to benefit in a large number of ways, including reducing injury, preventing back aches, reducing the risk of spinal injury, as well as giving you more energy and potentially a lower body fat percentage. The additional stability gained in the core is really going to benefit you if you wish to continue training, and build lean muscle, and get six-pack abdominal muscles.

What Causes Gardening Back Pain

Now that Christmas is over, its time yet again to start flicking through those seed catalogues and we'll soon start to think about getting cracking in the garden, often neglected through the cold months and now looking a little bedraggled. Not far down the line will be the recurrence of our lower back pain, followed by the thoughts that "I've overdone it", and the search for back pain relief or natural back pain treatments.

It's this sudden activity of digging or raking or sweeping, or even repainting the sorry looking decking after a reasonably prolonged period without exercise, that can trigger acute lower back pain. Usually, these activities entail us adopting poor posture for relatively extended periods of time, with motions involving repetitive twisting, moving our rake or hoe towards us, and lifting way from ourselves (such as digging), that cause our lumbar pain. Generally it's not necessarily the weights involved, (although clay soil is generally not much fun!), that end up causing us backache, its often the fact that our backs are not designed for these repetitive, unergonomic movements, certainly not for extended period of time.

Although the discomfort doesn't necessarily become excessive whilst we are digging or raking. It's usually afterwards, during the night, or the following day, after we've rested, that inflammation or swelling occurs in the joints around the lumbar region of the lower back, causing them to 'stiffen' and the inevitable onset of backache and discomfort.

Lumbar pain or Sciatica can occur as a result of those intervertebral nerves positioned very close to the swollen joints or tissue becoming irritated or pinched. This can manifest itself in sciatica symptoms and pain down our legs or buttocks, or indeed back pain as a result of muscle spasm. The nerves exiting between the vertebrae are positioned very close to the swollen joints. These nerves can become "pinched" or "irritated" triggering back pain. This can lead to acute muscle spasm and pain that may or may not travel down to the leg or buttocks.

The most effective backpain relief or treatment for this condition is to encourage normal movement of the area and keep it that way long enough for it to heal, and try to keep reasonable mobile. By having good mobility in the swollen and sore joints, the inflamed tissues can be 'flushed out' as the circulation inside the joint is improved, helping the joints heal much faster.

To reduce the inflammation and swelling around the nerves and joints, to derive lumbar pain relief, it's often useful to apply an ice pack for about fifteen minutes or so at a time, two or three times a day. Although usually this type of self inflicted discomfort will ease gradually in a few days, but if conservative back pain therapy doesn't work, then it's worthwhile making an appointment to see your GP just to ensure that something more serious is not causing the back pain, such as a disc herniation.

Do's
Sleep on your side or on your back with pillows under or between knees.Take throw pillows to work and in the car for support.Use proper bending and lifting techniques.Use step ladders for reaching high places and mats for low places rather than bending or stretching too much.Apply ice pack if you see swelling.

Don'ts
Don't drive or ride in vehicle for over an hour and a half a day when possible and don't slouch while driving.Don't sit at a desk or computer short of an hour without stretching and standing.Don't lift without bending your knees. If you think it's too heavy and you feel pain, STOP!!Don't sleep on your stomach.Don't ignore pain; if you are having discomfort, something IS wrong.Don't let anyone try to pop, or deeply massage your back other than a therapist or doctor.Don't try to work through the pain. STOP! Relax...Take a breather. Try lying down! Don't overdo it.Don't wear shoes with no support. Ladies, heels are amazing but they are not your back's friend.Don't be a hero!!! Your back is more important than your pride.Don't put off going to doctor if pain lasts more than a few days.

Is Your Back Pain Due to SI Joint Dysfunction?

A painful sacroiliac joint is one of the more common causes of mechanical low back pain. There are two SI joints, each located on either side of the sacrum.

These joints allow twisting movements when we move our legs.

There are many different terms for sacroiliac joint problems, including SI joint dysfunction, Sacroiliac joint strain, and joint inflammation (sacroiliitis). Each of these terms refers to a condition that causes pain in the sacroiliac joints from a variety of causes.

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction may occur when an SI joint is injured or irritated. This is seldom dangerous and rarely requires surgery.

There are many different causes of SI joint pain. These joints have a cartilage layer covering the bone which allows for some movement and acts as a shock absorber between the bones. When this cartilage is damaged or worn away, the bones begin to rub on each other, and degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis) occurs. This is the most common cause of Sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

Pregnancy may be a factor in the development of joint problems. During pregnancy, hormones are released that lets ligaments relax. The relaxation of the ligaments holding the SI joints together allows for increased motion in the joints and can lead to increased stresses and abnormal wear.

If a person has one leg which is shorter that the other, the abnormal alignment may cause joint pain.

SI joint dysfunction can also occur from trauma, such as injuries resulting from a fall or associated with a motor vehicle accident.

The most common symptom of SI joint dysfunction is pain in the low back that is aggravated by prolonged sitting, standing, and stair climbing.

The diagnosis is often overlooked.

The most accurate method of diagnosing joint dysfunction is by performing an injection that can numb the irritated area. An anesthetic material with a steroid can be injected directly into the SI joint. This is usually performed with X-ray guidance to verify that the injection is correctly placed in the joint.

If the anesthetic and steroid relieves the pain from inflammation within the joint, this helps to verify that the Sacroiliac joint is the source of the pain, and treatment can target the SI Joint specifically.

When Back Pain Is The Sign Of A Kidney Problem

Any type of pain in the body is the sign of a problem. Back pain is a symptom of many different medical problems, not always isolated to the back itself. There are a number of organs nestled in the torso that can, when suffering dysfunction, result in back pain. The kidney is one such organ.

It is important to distinguish between back pain caused by a back problem and back pain caused by a kidney problem. Kidney conditions can be serious and warrant immediate medical attention. Fortunately, common types of kidney problems have other symptoms that can help you identify them.

The kidneys are located between the mid and lower back very close to the muscles of the back. They are each about the size of a fist.
