4. Lift Properly. You need to take the weight off your back when lifting, especially heavy items. Lift with your knees and legs, bend and cradle the item you are lifting, and listen, don't be afraid to ask for help when lifting a heavy object. Many macho men have hurt their back lifting wrong.

Pinched Nerves Cause Back Pain

Everyone has at one time or another applied too much pressure to the "funny bone" in their elbow which is actually the ulnar nerve. This physical pressure disrupts the nerve's function causing pain, tingling, numbness or weakness from the elbow into the fingers of the hand. Too much pressure applied for too long to a nerve along the spine results in much the same sensations. Where these sensations occur naturally depends upon the pathway of the specific involved nerve as illustrated above.

Nerve pain resulting from direct physical pressure is called an entrapment neuropathy because the nerve is trapped or pinched by some structure. This term helps to distinguish them from neuropathies resulting from infection or disease where the nerve pain is more often referred to as neuritis or neuralgia.

Radiculitis / Radiculopathy

These are not specific conditions, but rather describe a nerve that is being pinched at or very near the spinal cord at the beginning or ''root'' of the nerve. Radiculitis is from Latin radiculo for root plus itis for inflammation. Radiculopathy comes from the same Latin radiculo for root plus Greek pathos for suffering. There may be slight technical differences between the two words but in truth they are often used interchangeably without clear distinction.

In a radiculitis or radiculopathy the pinch is occurring at or near the root of the nerve along the spinal cord. The most common cause of this physical pressure is a herniated or protruding spinal intervertebral disc crushing the nerve against the bone resulting in pain at that level of the spine in the neck or back, and of course, along the pathway of the adjacent nerve root itself resulting in arm pain or leg pain through a process called referred pain or radicular pain. For example, a nerve root impingement in the neck, or cervical spine, can produce pain, motor weakness, or sensory paresthesia in the shoulder, arm or hand which is called brachial radiculitis from Latin brachio for arm or more simply a cervical radiculitis or cervical radiculopathy. Likewise, a nerve root impingement in the lower back or lumbar-sacral spine can be manifested with symptoms in the lower extremity, a lumbar radiculitis or lumbar radiculopathy. This can result in pain, weakness, numbness, or paresthesia in the butt, hip, leg or foot. This is often called sciatica, a reference to the nerve that is being pinched. Sciatica due to compression of one of the lumbar nerve roots is one of the most common forms of radiculopathy.

Neuritis / Neuralgia

Neuritis is from itis for inflammation and neuro for nerve. Neuralgia is from the Greek algos for pain and neuro for nerve. The difference between neuritis and neuralgia are again technical and these terms too are often used interchangeably. The most common cause of neuritis or neuralgia are generalized metabolic issues such as those that occur as a result of diabetes or alcoholism, and as such, the nerve dysfunction is generalized and widespread as opposed to being one specific nerve root such as in sciatica that is caused by direct physical pressure. Acute or chronic Poisoning most commonly by lead, arsenic, mercury, copper and phosphorus also results in widespread nerve dysfunction also correctly termed a neuritis or a neuralgia.

Back Pain - The 5 Fastest Ways to Find Relief

Since I have a long history with lower back pain I am going to present you my list of "The 5 fastest Ways to Find Relief". Keep in mind these relief techniques are not clinically tested but they worked for me and my lower back and neck pain. I believe most, if not all, doctors have no idea what will work for you. What they seem to be doing is writing prescriptions for pain killers and muscle relaxers but they are not treating the actual cause of the "Back Pain".

1. The first method is using Topical Back Pain Relief Medications. These I find offer the fastest pain relief. Also I should mention that I am referring to prescription medications. You don't have to worry though because in most cases all you have to do is call your doctor to set up a prescription. I always go to see my doctor and she can usually find samples to give me and it saves me money. Most of the time it only takes about 1 hour for the topical medicine to work and my back pain is relieved.

2. This is also a topical medication but an over the counter solution. There are many over the counter topical pads and creams and even herbal products that I have used and find very effective. These also take around 1 hr to take effect. It's worth mentioning that some of the most effective are only available by mail order so there is another source for you to research.

Tips For Choosing The Best Mattress For Back Pain

I am sure you have heard from family members or friends that they were experiencing sleepless nights. Their excuses range from stress from work, relationship and financial problems to medical conditions. In many cases it could be simply the mattress they are sleeping on.

Sleeping on the wrong type of mattress not only lead to sleeplessness, but can cause aches and chronic back pain. If you are already suffering from back pain then the wrong mattress may worsen your back pain. Conversely, the right type of mattress will help you sleep well and wake up feeling refreshed.

So what is the best mattress to sleep on especially if you have back pain? The answer is "none".

It all depends on the person's preference, lifestyle, sleeping position and medical condition, if any. There is no single mattress or sleeping posture that is the best for all people. What is perfect for one person may not work as well for another. Scientific studies on the correlation between mattress and back problems have also been inconclusive. What we do know is the fact that your whole body will relax while you sleep. Therefore it is very important to sleep well in a good mattress so that your back pain can heal faster.

With the dizzying variety of mattresses at your furniture malls and specialty bed stores, each claiming to be the best, choosing the right one is a real challenge. Here are some tips.

Sleeping Position and Matching Mattress

The type of mattress that is most suitable for your body depends to some extent your sleeping position. So it is wise to examine the different types of sleeping positions. The most comfortable position to sleep in is determined by personal preferences and the type of back pain you are suffering from. Essentially there are three common sleep positions: on your back, on your stomach and on your sides.

For back sleepers, putting a small pillow underneath your knees will reduce the stress on your spine and maintain the natural curve of your back. This is generally the best sleeping position with mattress that offers the right support for the back. If you sleep on your stomach, then a firmer support surface is required to prevent spinal distortion which may lead to back pain.

Side sleepers are subject to pressure points as their weights rest on the smallest areas of the body and this result in bad circulation. Placing a bolster between their knees will help reduce the stress. Mattress with a softer and plush feel will be preferred.

Choosing The Best Mattress

It is not always possible to sleep on a mattress before buying it, but at least lie or sit on it at different sections until you feel comfortable about it. There are two important factors you have to consider when evaluating a mattress: good back support and comfort.

Support depends on the coil type, coil count and connections between the coils. The coils should be made of steel and the thicker the coil, the more support the mattress will provide.

The coil count ranges from 300 to 800 per mattress and generally more coils offer better support. The coils must be interconnected by wires to prevent misalignment.

Remember to check these three important data before buying.

Other things you should ask the salesperson are the structures of the middle padding, insulation padding and the spring box, which is the foundation of the mattress.

Comfort depends mainly on the upholstery and edge materials. The upholstery is the layers of foam and fabric that separate you from the coils. Plush designs like "pillow top" offer thick padding for a rich luxurious feel. If you prefer a less plush feel, select the padding with less upholstery. This is really a personal preference. The edge of the mattress should also be made of strong material to prevent sagging and roll off when you sleep near the edge.

More coils and thicker padding are generally more expensive and better in quality, but it is not an assurance that the mattress is more supportive and comfortable.

A soft and plush mattress may provide you with a comfortable feeling but not the support your back needs. The outcome is you may wake up the next morning with stiffness and aches in your body. If the mattress is too firm it may not conform to the natural curves of your spine and again your back will suffer from the same effects.

Do not be deceived by advertisements with bold claims. The best mattress for back pain provides good support and high comfort level, but is not necessarily the most expensive. Mattresses that are expensive are normally due to high quality materials used but not necessary better. Ultimately it is the body of the person who is responsible for deciding if a mattress is good or bad.

So you have to find a balance between good support and comfort level. If you can sleep well and wake up feeling refreshed without aches and stiffness then it is the best mattress for you.

We spend about 30% of our lifetime sleeping on a mattress so we should invest a bit more on a really good mattress.

If after spending all the effort in evaluating and buying a good mattress you still have persistent back pain, then it may not be due to the mattress, but an underlying back condition. The best advice is see your doctor for a complete and detail check on your health.

It may be that future or recurring lower back pain could be reduced or alleviated by early intervention and seeking pain relief when the lower back pain first occurs. This could be by seeking immediate treatment from a physiotherapist according to a research thesis recently carried out.

Many people suffer with backache or pain, and most get better. However, those who suffer with long-term pain can find that their work, everyday and leisure activities are limited to varying degrees. Given that long-term pain often requires extensive treatment, it is important that the pain be treated at an early stage.

The research objective was to find out whether patients' low back pain could be alleviated in the long run if primary care clinics could offer examinations and treatment by a physiotherapist without any delay in the form of a doctor's referral or waiting list. In short whether time was of the essence.

The research created a same-day appointment model with the option of going straight to a physiotherapist, with or without a referral from a doctor. The effect of receiving an examination and treatment within 48 hours was subsequently evaluated compared to being on a waiting list for four weeks before receiving the same treatment. 60 patients with low back pain for 3-12 weeks took part in the study.

Results showed that both groups improved after the treatment ended. Interestingly the group that had been given early access to an examination and individualised treatment maintained their improvement after six months, while the group that had been held on a waiting list were more likely to suffer with recurring back pain. It was therefore concluded that early examination and treatment by a physiotherapist as soon as a patient asks for care could be important for reducing low back pain in the long term.

The research also included an investigation of 130 women who had suffered with low back pain for more than three months and who among others had undertaken a walk test. A follow-up after two years revealed that the walk test was a good predictor of both future ability to work and limitations in everyday activities.

At present the general recommendation for patients with long-term widespread pain or fibromyalgia be given education and a physical exercise programme to help alleviate their symptoms. The above research also looked at which patients benefit most from this treatment. 166 patients with widespread pain or fibromyalgia were randomly divided into two groups, the first of which was given a six-session education programme and 20-week pool exercise programme supervised by a physiotherapist, while the second was given just the education programme.

Results for this secondary piece of work showed that the group that received both the education and the physical exercise programme showed the greatest improvement in perceived health, and that patients with moderate symptoms benefited most from exercise.

For sure it is only one study but it does beg the question whether we are using the most appropriate treatments for pain in the lower back and there could be a significant improvement in the rate of long term cure if we could speed up the process of referral.
