Five Natural Cures For Back Pain

It's all too easy these days to make a visit to the doctor for a minor ailment and to be issued with an anti biotic of some sort. What's really frustrating about this approach apart for the cost of issuing these drugs that in most cases the anti-biotic will have no effect because the cause of the ailment is a virus.

Many of us follow the same demanding approach when we get a back ache or pain. Of course we all want immediate relief but is a constant supply of anti-inflammatory pain killers really the answer to our problems long-term?

Firstly from a time perspective a backache, pain or lumbago that persists for over 3 months may be termed as acute. So if you have only recently started to have a backache, the chances are it might go away within a few days or weeks and usually back aches and pains can go away by adopting a few self care measures or "natural cures for back pain" as follows:

• Starting from the day one when the back aches occur, try to rest in a comfortable position. One way of doing it is lying on your side with a pillow between your knees, or by lying flat on your back on the floor with a cushion under your knees. Make sure that you don't become too passive in a single posture. You could take a short walk, after every short spell of rest before reclining to rest again.

• The use of heating pads, has also known to be a backache treatment therapy, you can use a heating pad for 10 to 15 minutes every 2 or 3 hours. You can also try a warm shower in combination to sessions of the heating pad. In addition to this warm back pain treatment, you may also try cold sponging. Although treatment with heat or ice may not help in every back pain scenario, but you can try them to see if they help. You can also switch between heat and cold applications.

• As soon as you feel a little relieved, try doing your day to day chores. This helps your muscles stay strong. Staying in active for more than 1 or 2 days can actually make your backache or pain problem worse.

• Taking a walk regularly can do wonders to subside the pain in your back. Even if your doctor has recommended more specific exercises, a good walk can be one of the best natural cures for back pain.

• You have to take it in to consideration, even after a successful treatment for pain in the back, you still stand vulnerable to a re lapse. So take all possible precautions like, regularly exercising your back and stomach muscles, avoid abnormal angles when lifting heavy loads and most of all whatever you do make sure not to over exert yourself and end up injuring yourself again.

Having said all this about natural cures for back pain, it doesn't mean that drugs don't have a part to play. You may have to resort to some pain relievers such as Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, Aleve or Naprosyn. Most medicines work best if taken on a prescribed schedule.

Mild backache sufferer Paul Yates is researching back pain relief devices so that he can alleviate his symptoms and continue working at a computer. Paul is a keen believer in natural cures for back pain such as acupressure, exercise and shiatsu.

How to Have a Safe Recovery From Spinal Fusion Surgery

ByHester A Nunn

Back pain might make someone extremely uncomfortable and it can cause intense pain at times. A doctor might have even added extra stress when they recommended the patient for spinal fusion surgery. Although the doctor may have chosen this procedure over other forms of treatments, the patient can feel like they should have tried more medication and physical treatment rather than impose spinal fusion surgery. However, if the operation is needed, it can provide a quicker fix than some other treatments. Once the surgery has taken place, there needs to be some things that are followed to ensure a safe and speedy recovery.

After the surgery, the patient is required to follow the doctor's advice to the utmost. This can be enhanced through acute listening to the doctor on pain management strategies. Though this seems an obvious tip, it is often forgotten. The doctor will clearly indicate the dos and don'ts after the operation together with a recommendation of a physiotherapy course. The major challenge is actually never on listening to the doctors but rather on following their instructions and guidelines. The advice is meant for the patient's health so it is necessary to follow it straight away and do as directed.

Keeping good communication with the doctor is also vital after the surgery. Spinal fusion surgery is actually associated with various complications hence the need to handle it with ultimate care and attention. In case of any problems, the patient should contact the doctor immediately to allow for diagnosis that will enable the problem to be fixed as soon as possible. In case there is no change in the continuing pain, the patient should discuss it with their doctor to try to come up with some new solutions.

Away from the doctor's requirements, there are many things that the patient can do personally to improve the healing process. All this starts with positive thinking. This, though sounding funny is actually crucial during the recovery. If someone is always thinking that they will never recover, then it is going to be true in real life. It is best for the individual to always come up with ways that they can use to mentally influence and aid their recovery.

Before the spinal fusion surgery, the patient needs to prepare them self for it. They need to bear in mind that the surgery will cause changes in many of their daily activities. The preparation entails having enough food in the freezer such that it may not strain the back while cooking worsening the condition. Properly arranging the house in a suitable manner will help the patient's entry and exit without any problem. It is important to make all the arrangements right before the spinal fusion surgery.

The patient should also exercise routinely as recommended by a qualified therapist. This will enable the individual to gain strength in their back while struggling with the physical limits. It's best to start the exercises as soon as possible. All these strategies should be completed by taking a good rest. This though does not mean staying in bed all day and night.

All in all, it is important for a patient to have a safe recovery from spinal fusion surgery to make sure that they can have a comfortable lifestyle afterwards. This means that the patient should follow their doctor's advice but they should also make a personal effort to carry out what is needed to make sure the recovery is successful.

What Are the Causes and Remedies for Lower Back Pain?

ByHester A Nunn

If someone is suffering from lower back pain, it is not surprising that they may wish to know what causes the pain and the ways in which the pain can be stopped. In many cases, it is not often possible to point out the exact cause of lower back pain. All the same, it is not important to know the cause in order to eliminate the pain effectively.

One of the most common causes of low back ache is inter-vertebral disc degeneration. This is a condition where the discs between the vertebrae are wearing out due to age. This loses the cushioning property of the discs leading to painful experiences around the back. Muscle tensions, spasms, ruptured discs and bones may also serve as the causes of low back pain. Sitting and sleeping postures are yet other suspected triggers of lower back pain. This may be as a result of strained back muscles and discussed making them experience a lot of pain.

Heavy tasks that the body is not used to performing may also serve as a pre-requisite to back ache. Compression of the spinal nerves and osteoarthritis are also other causes of low back ache. Having understood some of the major causes of lower back ache, it may require the individual to find out the ways and means of eliminating this pain in a fast and effective manner.

Low back pain treatment and relief work is a way to prevent the causes of back ache in different ways. There are some remedies that work to repair nerves and the spinal attachments. Spinal surgery and lower back fusion surgery are all part of the strategies of eliminating pain on the back bone. A decompressing therapy on the other hand is an effective way of eliminating lower back pain.

Other times, simple prescriptions of drugs may be enough to eliminate low back ache. These drugs are usually pain relievers. Acute lower back pain may be very painful and eventually will affect someone in many different ways if left untreated. The doctor is however responsible in changing their medication depending with what is ideal for a patient. The alteration by the doctor on the medication is targeted on establishing the best treatment.

Steroids and opioid analgesics are administered to a patient to help treat their low back ache. This medication is however meant for short time usage only. The medication needs to be taken as per the physician's prescriptions or under their guidance to enhance effectiveness. In case of severe and intolerable lower back pain, subcutaneous electric manipulation can be used to treat the pain. This method has proved quite effective in its functioning. Chiropractic treatment and use of zero gravity chairs are also suitable forms of treating lower back pain as they help rescue the back of the body weigh resting on it.

Overall, there are many forms of treatment to help those suffering from lower back ache. Whilst surgical treatment is primarily used for more complicated procedures, more simple problems are able to be treated using medicine and physical therapy. If the right treatment is used effectively, it can end someone's lower back pain within a short period of time.

Do You Have a Pain in the Neck? (Shoulder or Back?)

To understand the nature of back pain we first need to look at what pain is and how it affects us as human beings on a physiological, physical, emotional and even mental level.

What is Pain?

When most people experience pain of any kind they only ever look at the level of discomfort it causes without really thinking about why the human body produces a pain response in the first place. Put simply pain is the body's early warning system which warns us that we're causing damage to ourselves and that we need to stop straight away and it becomes a learned response for each of us.

For example if you accidentally put your hand on a hot surface your nervous system instantly creates a pain response which ensures that you instantly remove your hand from the hot surface to prevent any further damage. Your brain then stores a pain response associated with that incident so in future you'll be far more careful about where you put your hands. Pain is only ever the symptom of something else happening to you and pain there to stop you from hurting yourself. It has been a hugely important part of how we've evolved as people.

(CNS) and (PNS)

The nervous system which we briefly mentioned above is basically in charge of all the pain events that your body experiences. Your nervous system is basically split into two parts. There is the Central Nervous System (CNS) which is your brain and which controls all the higher functions of the body. Then there is the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) which are all the pain "pathways" from your fingers, toes, back, neck and shoulders directly back to your brain. So when you burn your fingers on a hot surface the message is sent via the PNS to the CNS which quickly alerts your body to move away from the pain in a typical pain response situation.

The Keyword is Posture

But when it comes to dealing with neck, shoulder and back pain the CNS and PNS still play a part but the situation is slightly different and in a way we actually allow and even encourage this type of pain to happen. Encourage? Why would anyone in their right mind encourage a pain response?

Well folks it's all to do with how modern life has changed the most basic part of human nature - our posture. If you look at a young child that has just about learned how to walk or sit up you'll notice their posture is straight in that their back is straight and their shoulders aren't slumped. They have a naturally correct posture because they know to sit or stand any other way will be uncomfortable and eventually cause them some level of discomfort.

Now look at how you're sitting right now reading this article. Are you sitting upright with your feet firmly on the floor or are you slumped forward, head resting in one hand and maybe a cup of coffee in the other? How long have you been sitting there like that? 20 minutes? An hour? Or can you even remember?

Now your reaction after reading this is to sit back and probably stretch out your back and to wriggle your neck from side-to-side to loosen it up. How many times during each day do you do that? Relax, we're not trying to interrogate you here but the idea is to make you think, even briefly, about how often each day you have absolutely awful posture. And you're doing it without realizing that you're doing it. It's become almost a subconscious part of your daily routine - it's not like you're deliberately going to harm yourself now are you?

The positions we sit in at work, in the car, on the train, on a plane or even at home surfing the web and the types of work we do all play a huge role in how our bodies try to overcompensate for lack of correct posture. This puts an immense amount of strain on our back, neck and shoulders which are all interconnected by the same nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Think of your back as a railway bridge - if you remove one element of the bridge then there's extra pressure put on other supporting structures and, with enough extra pressure, the bridge simply gives way. This is exactly how neck, shoulder and back pain and even chronic pain develop.

Let me highlight for you how a simple change to our physiology can make a massive difference to how our physical human support system. The average adult human head weighs over 10 pounds and if not properly supported (because you're slouching, stooped over or leaning forward staring at a screen...see you're doing it again aren't you?) can put a lot of extra strain on the body. To highlight this it's the equivalent of holding a small dog suspended in the air with one arm for more than several minutes - your muscles will start to ache very quickly.

This is exactly what happens when one part of your upper body is in a totally unnatural posture. The rest of your musculoskeletal system then needs to adjust itself to provide the support your body needs to stay balanced and upright. You won't need to think about this because our wonderful human bodies take care of this for us in fractions of a second to make sure we don't fall over. Initially you probably won't even notice any side-effects in terms of the pain from sitting, walking or standing with bad posture.

But given time the pain will develop and grow and grow until you're forced to take anti-inflammatory medication or painkillers. And although these types of medications can be very effective in dealing with the pain, they're only a treatment for the symptoms of the pain response itself. They simply do not deal with the root cause of your pain. Without addressing the root cause of your neck, shoulder or back pain, you're simply going to be managing the pain forever instead of curing it permanently.

Our aim is to move you away from pain management through medication and help you enjoy a pain-free life. Posture is so important. We want you to learn techniques to help you attain a better posture. There are solutions; you just have to look for them. We'll help you achieve a pain free life in a shorter time frame than you probably thought was possible, outside the realm of magic.

What Are the Causes and Symptoms of Neck Pain

ByHester A Nunn

Neck pain can be acquired in many ways like sleeping in a bad position or from certain headaches. Neck pain can also be a part of something much more serious and it could be a danger to the spinal area. There are specialists that want to help and find solutions that could help fix any neck problems and find a way to solve and cure the pain. Neck pain is a problem if not treated and checked correctly.

Having neck pain can occur from different ways such as:

Whiplash - This is a jerk of the head that causes damage to the neck.

Arthritis - Stiffness at the joint that causes pain as well as inflammation occurring.

Degenerative Disc Disease - When the spinal discs slowly get smaller and smaller over age, but degenerative disc disease speeds up the process and can cause the person to have severe pain.

Muscle Strain - This is a tear in the muscle that was once attached to the tendons.

Those are a few ways that can cause neck pain. Whiplash is one of the most common causes that can damage the spine which most commonly happens in a car accident. Whiplash causes the neck to jerk and make it to turn where the neck and spinal cord move quickly and cause major complications. One complication from whiplash is that it causes the neck to move in a different position, but also have the spinal disc move in a position that it might leave the person paralyzed.

Neck ache can be something that can cause someone to have problems. Many people would look for solutions that they think will help and fix their neck. Some of the methods that people think that make their neck pain better cannot resolve it to a point that it will completely fix their neck. Another way people think that they might help fix neck pain is by taking medication which will help to a point, but if the pain is extreme, medication cannot help hide the pain of their neck. In other cases, they will just tell them to keep moving the position of where their pain is so that they adjust to it and don't feel it anymore, but that may damage the neck even more. It can also be a greater problem then just the neck which is focusing on the spinal cord as well.

Neck ache is something that can be taken lightly or seriously by how bad it's been damage. Any extreme damage to the neck can cause people to have motor problems that could alter their life significantly. Therefore, it's is important to get any neck pain treated quickly to reduce the chances of any complications arising.

Sciatica Exercises for Optimum Health

BySteven Sea

Sciatica exercises for the different types of sciatica conditions vary and need to be done properly as well as on a regular basis in order to obtain the best results. Sciatica can be a symptom of a herniated disc, from degenerative disc disease, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, and spinal stenosis, from Piriformis syndrome as well as Isthmic spondylolisthesis. Each condition has its own set of exercises which need to be followed through correctly.

For example sciatica caused by a herniated disc, whereby the nerve is compressed due to the disc protruding which causes a radiating pain along the nerve root as well as acute leg pain. Recommended sciatica exercises for this condition are press ups or extension exercises which alleviate the pain when the muscles move up in the lower extremities and into the lumbar region.

Spinal stenosis is caused by the sciatic nerve being irritated which in turn restricts the sciatic nerve's passageway. When the muscles are flexed or when walking, one will experience pain down the leg. Sciatica exercises require bending forward and flexing the lower spine which help to expand and clear the passage. These exercises stabilize the lumbar spine and promote healing.

When suffering from degenerative disc disease the disc intrudes on the nerve and causes sciatica then lumbar stabilization is required. Sciatica exercises such as the McKenzie protocol are prescribed which include exercise movements that train the pelvic and lumbar spine region. Isthmic spondylolisthesis involves the N5 nerve which is impinged. Stabilizing and flexing sciatica exercises are used in order for the patient to maintain a flexed stable lumbar spine position.

People suffering from Piriformis syndrome experience sciatica pain although this syndrome is not associated with sciatica. The piriformis muscle which lies close to the sciatic nerve is affected and this is what causes severe pain. These patients experience numbness, tingling as well as pain down the leg and foot. Sciatica exercises such as stretching exercises, hip extensor and hamstring muscle exercises help lower the painful symptoms.

In order to maintain long term sciatica relief these sciatica exercises should be performed daily and not seen as a mean to eliminating the pain only. These exercises ensure good spinal health, and help you maintain good posture. One should avoid sitting or standing in the same position for long periods time. Exercise as well as a healthy diet should be include in your day to day routine as this ensures a healthy body and mind.

What Are the Most Proven Types of Back Pain Treatment?

ByHester A Nunn

Currently, it has been proven a variety of back pain treatments are available in the market. They range from self-treatment to medication as prescribed by medical professionals. For self treatment, a number of therapies are available. They are broadly categorized into chiropractic treatment and physiotherapy. Back pain can start as a mild pain in the spine but it still can last for as long as it takes in severe cases. For better back pain treatment, it is better to understand the cause or simply the problem.

At the onset of back pain, we often fail to understand what kind of treatment to apply for a cure. Others opt for an immediate solution for the problem. This being the case and due to wandering of the mind concerning the next move, we often find ourselves trying all sorts of treatments that may be available so as to eradicate the pain as soon as possible. Many people go to a physician for pain relief or better yet, they visit a chiropractor for spine manipulation which can be one way of undergoing back ache treatment.

Back pain usually differs from one person to another hence the treatment methods for the pain won't be the same. The pain though is felt by all sufferers around the neck, shoulders and the spine. It depends on the affected place to determine the type of treatment that is most effective. For example, lower back ache is effectively treated by chiropractic treatment. Even though the method has been regarded as the most effective, its effects are felt after a long period of time.

There are those who would need immediate relief of back ache. For this kind of back ache treatment, the patient needs to consult the expertise of a spine consultant. In the process, painkillers may be prescribed as medication and observation is monitored. Back aches are often associated with bad sitting and sleeping postures. In order to eliminate such causes, patients are required to improve their posture to reduce the chances of suffering back ache. This is approved in reducing bone and muscular irregularities. Resting is crucial to avoid exhaustion of the spine from supporting the body weight.

A number of exercises have also been approved as helpful in back ache treatment. Besides the regular training, there are some specific exercises that are performed to reduce back pain. The exercises are supposed to be obtained from professional doctors who have specialized in selecting and approving them.

Severe back pains can be cured through regular exercises. The exercises help in strengthening the muscles and make the bones stronger withstanding the body weight. This way, it prevents back ache from being experienced. Regular trainees are less likely to suffer from back pain according to medical research.

In the end, it is important to note that the most effective back ache treatment depends on the type of pain and where it is experienced. That way, the right form of treatment can be applied. After all, better treatment methods can result in a quick recovery from back pain.

What Are the Situations That May Call For Back Surgery?

ByHester A Nunn

These days, back pain is a common ailment among many people. Though a number of treatments have been invented, in severe conditions, the treatments may not be better enough in treating the pain effectively. This is a situation that will necessitate back surgery to be administered to a patient. It is usually recommended as the last resort when all other treatments have failed to be effective. Back pain is never considered as a serious condition but in severe conditions, it can cause painful experiences that may lead to the inability to stand upright thus limiting movements within. Back surgery is an effective method of restoring the normal functions of the spine.

After a successful operation involving back surgery, the spine muscles are strengthened to prevent a re-occurrence of the injury to the back. Damages to the back bone are usually caused by a number of factors such as age, trauma, incorrect body mechanics like posture and shape, and consistent wearing out of the tissues due to continued use. Injuries are also serious causes of back pain. It is indicated that when severe pain affects some individuals for a long time, the sufferers are most likely to seek treatment using back surgery.

The fact that there are many other treatments for back pain should give to the patient a lot to consider when making a decision. After considering the pros and cons of each treatment method, the patient will then settle on the most effective. Back pain cases to a greater percentage do not require back operation for their treatment but if recommended as the last option, then it is worth the sacrifice.

However, it's important to establish some of the cases for which back surgery is needed. Firstly, in cases that involves the compression of the spinal nerves. This is known to cause disabling pain and insensitivity on the back which hinders movement. The other situation that may necessitate back surgery for treating back pain is the case that involves a broken or ruptured herniated disc. This may be as a result of an accident. Since the discs act as cushions separating various bones of the spine, this can only be corrected by back operation.

Fractured bones around the back may also make the back bone unstable for support hence the need to perform back surgery to eliminate the pain. Osteoporosis is a serious spinal infection that corrodes away the spine. In case of such a condition, back surgery is often necessary to control back pain and restore the proper function of the back bone.

In addition to those; bone deformities, fractures and other conditions may also call for back surgery. This is mainly when the conditions become very painful and ultimately result in the compression of the nerves. Weakening of the vertebrae through accidents may necessitate a fast back surgical operation to help restore the proper use of the spine. Medical professionals recommend that all treatment methods need to be considered before deciding on back surgery. This is because surgery can be risky. It is also expensive and tedious to carry out. It should only be considered as the last resort when all other treatments have failed.

To conclude, the main purpose of back surgery is to help cure those suffering for severe spinal troubles. Whilst it is a complicated and disruptive procedure, it can sometimes be a necessary requirement to help eradicate or cure someone suffering from a severe spinal condition such as osteoporosis.

Four Back Pain Relief Tips For Motorcyclists

Every June sees the start of the Isle of Man TT races, to which thousands of bikers will converge to watch the road action, which was first run in 1905 (as a result of a blanket 20mph speed limit being imposed on UK roads in 1903).

Quite a few of these bikers will experience back aches and pains as a "necessary evil" of their recreation, but this need not be the case, although there is a causal link between motor bike riding and pain in the lower back.

Often, dedicated motorcyclists will experience backache or pain, either in the lower back or upper back, or maybe across the shoulders and neck. The most likely factors contributing to the pain will be posture, due to the bikers prolonged crouched, leaning posture, and WBV (Whole Body Vibration), associated with being seated literally on top of the vibrating engine. Remaining in what is fundamentally, an ergonomically unsound position for extended periods, will often lead to muscle strains, back aches and lumbar pain.

In order to get back pain relief, it is a good idea for motorcyclists to develop a simple regime to combat the causes of back pain, both on and away from the bike:-

Equipment

It goes without saying or maybe this is a bit like bolting the stable door but make sure that when you are selecting your bike or a new bike that it is the right size for you. Too small could leave you riding in a cramped style, too large and you could be over reaching. Either could lead to unnecessary strains and back pain down the line.

Exercise

A simple regime will help to strengthen the back and abdominal muscles. Building up muscle and flexibility will help the back to cope with the unnatural riding position and stave off the aches and pains.

Posture

Benefit may be gained by consciously considering whether your posture (on and off the bike) may contribute to any lumbar pain. Away from the bike, think about, and become aware of your posture, for example, try to avoid slouching when seated, say at a desk. Ideally its best to be upright with your head vertically above your lumbar and hips.

On the bike, is it possible to reduce the need to hunch forward towards the controls? Can your back pain be reduced by not leaning so far forwards? (We're not talking TT racers here!) Making small adjustments to keep your back as upright as possible could help the risk of pain in the back.

Take a break

Where practical, try to punctuate long journeys with short breaks, get off the bike, walk around, loosen up your back, and ease stiffness by carrying out some simple stretching exercises to mobilise your back. Make sure to have frequent drinks to keep your body hydrated to help ward off muscle strains and backache.

If your motorcycling back pain becomes worse, or more frequent over time, then it's a good idea to seek professional back pain relief advice from your GP or healthcare professional.

Motor sport fanatic and backache sufferer Paul Yates is researching back pain relief devices so that he can alleviate his symptoms and continue the sport he loves. Paul is a keen believer in natural cures for back pain such as acupressure, exercise and shiatsu.

What Does a Patient Need to Know About Spinal Surgery?

ByHester A Nunn

Spinal surgery is a safe and very delicate procedure that helps people to better relieve pain from their spinal area. Some people undergo a procedure called invasive spinal surgery that makes surgery easier on the patient and the doctor. In the 1980's, this surgical procedure was shown that it helped improved the various use of hospital equipment. The operation is performed by making a tiny hole in the body and inserting a camera to find and analyze the problem. Once acknowledging the problem, the doctor then knows how to go about fixing the problem within the body.

After spinal surgery, it is best for a patient to keep precaution when doing anything. When sitting, people should sit for about 20 or 30 minutes as it will cause damage and strain to the back. It is also not safe to take a long walk as it will strain the back so a patient should rather take a really short walk. Two weeks after surgery, it is usually best to start increasing the amount of walking. A patient should not drive after the first 2 weeks of surgery because it will cause major straining from sitting too long. Even after 2 weeks, it is best not to take a long trip although a short one should be ok.

The patient should avoid bending or twisting the back when picking an object up from the flow. When picking up an object, they can try to bend your knees to lower themselves and allow them to get the object without injuring their back. People shouldn't carry anything that is over 10 pounds because it will strain the spine and the part of the back where people have gotten operated on. When going to bed, the recovering individual should sleep in a position which is comfortable and does not damage the spine.

Also, it is best to attend therapy sessions after surgery so that a physician can help the patient recuperate after surgery. The aim of this is to show the patient how to do basic tasks without hurting them self at home. An example of how therapy will help is by teaching the person how to get in and out of bed, and also how to get into a wheelchair when getting out of bed.

Overall, spinal surgery is not a simple process and it is something that should be done as a last resort. However, it is likely to help improve a patient's lifestyle and cure their condition although it may take many weeks or months for the individual to make a full recovery.

Treatment of Sciatica

A combination of pressure and inflammation on the nerve root can cause sciatic nerve pain and several treatments can relieve these factors. Although surgery may be needed in cases where the spinal column or cord has already been damaged, most treatments are non-invasive and fairly easy.

Commonly, sciatica pain is treated with pain killers such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Due to their high risk for addiction, opiate-based pain killers are only utilized as a last resort. In addition, doctors are also recommending routine exercise to treat sciatica pain, as by stretching and strengthening your back and leg muscles, you can release the pressure on the sciatic nerve. But the best treatment by far for sciatica pain is to alter certain habits in your lifestyle that may contribute to the pain, in order to prevent or alleviate sciatica symptoms.

Bad posture could be adding a lot of extra stress on your spine, disks, muscles, ligaments, joints, and nerves; so simply by altering your posture, you can minimize sciatica pain and back injuries. Be sure not to slouch while sitting or leaning too far back or sitting too straight. You also want to keep your head aligned and not too far forward. The human head weighs roughly 15 pounds and if not properly supported by the neck, can cause a significant amount of stress on the muscles, ligaments, disks, and spine. It is crucial to have good back support as well by getting a chair that offers proper back support. Be sure to take breaks every thirty to sixty minutes to ensure that you are not sitting too long.

Take a minute to assess how you're standing. Is your pelvis pushed forward or backward or your shoulders hanging forward? How you stand can also impact your sciatic nerve. Try to avoid standing for prolonged periods of time, in order to avoid common sciatica symptoms, and be sure you're standing straight with your feet slightly apart. If you're not certain that you are standing straight, be sure that your shoulders are aligned with your ears. Keep your chin parallel to the ground and you can be sure that you're standing up straight.

When you're sleeping, posture matters too. It is bad for your back to sleep with pillows propping you up, sleep on your stomach, or on a sagging mattress. While lying on your back, you can keep your spine in correct alignment by putting a pillow beneath your knees to keep them slightly elevated. While sleeping on your side, you can place a pillow between your knees. Your pillow should be the proper density to keep your head aligned with your spine, without being too low or too high. In addition, your pillow should give your neck the proper support while sleeping on your back.

Try improving your posture, if you're looking for a natural treatment for sciatica pain. Proper exercise is also crucial as part of a natural sciatica treatment plan. Building up your muscles will help to avert them pressing on your sciatic nerve, and thus you can decrease or avoid sciatica symptoms altogether.

What Is Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery?

ByHester A Nunn

Minimally invasive spinal surgery is a new alternative method to operate on people. The main difference from regular spinal surgery is that it cuts down the amount of time it takes for the human body to heal and hence allows the patient to leave the hospital in a quicker period of time. It also helps in a sense of not having to cut open the patient, but merely just having to make a hole in the body to get started with the operation.

The way they go about performing minimally invasive spinal surgery is that they make a little incision that they then stick a keyhole camera within the body of the patient through a small hole that the doctor made. A keyhole camera is a small telescopic lens that has a micro camera on it which shows what is going on through the monitor they have hooked up on it. By inserting the device inside the body, the surgeon can tell what's wrong and use the right treatment to help cure the patient.

By performing the operation in this manner, there is a decreased risk of errors or injury to the patient in comparison to normal spinal surgery. By doing this, it can cut the recovery time for a patient to recover and subsequently it can allow the patient to go home quicker instead of sitting on a hospital bed for weeks on end. This can also be beneficial to the point that they will not leave any major scars on the patient however the surgery may leave tiny scars which can heal in a short time.

This kind of operation is becoming more common as technology continues to develop within the medical industry. It may also ease the patients mind as the concept of open surgery can be a bit more daunting than just a few little incisions. It can also give a surgeon an advantage as using a camera to explore and examine the troubled areas can give time for the doctor to find the root cause of the problem and then fix it without having to undertake any major risks.

All in all, minimally invasive spinal surgery is a method that allows a surgeon to perform surgery through small incisions cut into the area causing pain for the individual. Whilst it is a major operation, it can lead to discovering the exact problem and allowing for it to be fixed there and then. As long as the operation is successful and the back pain is cured, then the use of minimally invasive spinal surgery can be seen as a viable method of treatment.

ByHester A Nunn

Discomforts and a Date With the Chiropractor

ByBrian Goodwin

The chiropractor as a practitioner of chiropractic is, by definition, a person who wields "magic" in his hands. Chiropractic literally means "effective hands". It is a medical system of healing using the hands to fix misaligned bones, particularly the vertebrae, freeing up nerves and muscles to allow normal flow of blood and other fluids restoring the body's "innate intelligence". Thus normal bodily functions are restored healing the discomfort and disease.

Objective reckoning about things and happenings around us, including sickness, can result better judgment. In other words, in matters of physical heath, not every disease can be consulted to just any health or medical practitioner. A toothache, for instance, is for a dentist to fix. It is not a chiropractor's concern. How do we know when to consult a chiropractor? The question sounds like saying, "Hey, I want a chiropractic-related disease so that I can consult a chiropractor."

But seriously speaking, chiropractic diseases are something that cannot be treated with usual pain relief remedies like taking analgesic tablets or mefenamic acid. The condition, depending on its severity, will only be temporarily relieved or will not respond to such medications at all. Pains in the nape, neck and shoulders which may extend to the arms are symptoms that may require the services of a chiropractor.

If you have not yet experienced treatment of a chiropractic-related ailment, you will be surprised to find in the chiropractor's clinic some equipment resembling those found in physical fitness gyms. These types of equipment are indeed modified or specialised physical fitness contraptions used in chiropractic therapy. They are part of the treatment methods used by the chiropractor as some patients have conditions that, aside from the manual manipulations to restore misaligned bones, muscles and nerves, require certain physical exercises that will strengthen weakened muscles. These are done to stabilise the restoration of the proper alignments of the neuro-musculo-skeletal systems.

The manual manipulation of the vertebral column aimed at restoring the physical body's innate intelligence is the centrepiece of chiropractic healing. However, therapeutic prescriptions include lifestyle programs that incorporate certain physical exercises, with or without use of clinical or gym equipment, to maintain good body posture. Improper and wrong body postures influence alignments and positions of bones, muscles and nerves causing discomforts and pain in the long term that may affect even internal organs. Constricted muscles and nerves block or slow down flow of blood, lymphatic and other vital fluids causing malfunctions which, if not promptly acted upon, will become more or less fixed conditions of discomfort and/or disease.

Be keen on symptoms of chiropractic-related pains and discomforts. Chronic pains in the nape, neck and shoulder areas are definite symptoms. You may need to have a date with a chiropractor near you.

What one does in inversion therapy is to simply lie down and lock your feet in to the footholds. Then simply lean back to allow the board to tilt and invert you slightly with your feet in the air and your head close to the floor. By tilting you this way the usual stress that compounds on your spine everyday (caused by the downward pull of gravity) gets reversed relieving your back of pain, pressure and downward stress. Some Natural Remedies For Back Pain

Dorsalgia or back pain is a common complaint among adults. It restricts movement and activities. Moreover, it disrupts important occasions and economic productivity. According to Doctors Patel and Ogle of the University of Kansas Medical Center, although a lot of people complain about this type of pain, it is harmless in 90 out of a hundred percent of patients who suffer from it.

Back pain can be acute, sub acute or chronic. The temporal intervals being used to gauge this are from 3 to 6 months from the onset of pain. It can also be consistent or sporadic, pulsating or radiating to different back parts. Back pain may be either of the following: neck pain, middle back pain or lower back pain.

Although common, it is hard to pinpoint the exact cause of this common malady. A medical practitioner may find it unnecessary for a patient to undergo laboratory tests and other similar procedures, unless the patient in question has a history of cancer or is experiencing other symptoms that may be signals of a potential life-threatening condition.

Pain management used to be treated via special medication, rest and surgery, but natural remedies for back pain are now becoming more and more popular. Some prescription drugs may be in the form of and bought over the counter like topical patches, creams, ointments, acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen; while some drugs can only be administered by medical professionals (injectables).

Despite the fact that prescription drugs are fast-acting and more convenient in our busy world today, more people opt for natural remedies for their pain in the back because they are treatment minus the side effects drugs can cause.

Alternative remedies for chronic pain include exercise, massages, hot and cold compress, diet management, acupuncture, herbal medicine and food supplements. Specialized exercise programs help you improve your posture and sharpen your bodily awareness. Core-strengthening programs and movement therapies are highly suggested ways for your work out.

We are all going to love this: massage. Yes, a massage with your local physical therapist or your spa masseuse can relieve that aching pain in your back. Don't ask anyone to do the job, because applying the wrong form of pressure can worsen your condition. Acupuncture is also said to be relaxing and pain-relieving, and if you are alone, just get an ice pack and a heat pad.

Food intake is important as well. Watching what you eat counts. Take in more of that Vitamin D and Magnesium. Love the sun and eat those greens! Herbal medicines and food supplements are taken orally, usually before or after meals. They are usually made up of plant and fruit extracts.

Back pain is common, so instead of taking in drugs which usually have side effects, opt for healthier and safer remedies to treat that ache.

Are you searching for a place where you can find several natural remedies for back pain under one roof? If so, I highly suggest you take a look at Fakhoury Medical and Chiropractic Center in Ocala Florida. You can visit their website at http://head2toecare.com.

Benefits of Lower Back Pain Exercises

ByChristine M Harrell

When the small of the back feels like it has been jolted out of place, there are a number of possible ways forward. The best lower back pain exercises will get to the root of the problem. In effect, the exercises will seek to gently stretch the muscles so that they become more flexible. Likewise, building up strength in these muscles will be just as important. With a combination of delicate maneuvers, most experts believe that people should then be able to protect themselves from similar pain in the future.

Yoga can be a great way to gain flexibility in many areas of the body. Many men and women swear by it. In addition to stretching out the lower back, it also helps people to start the day with a calmer mindset. Beginners to yoga should be careful and should attempt to ease their way into the activity. If they are just getting over back pain, they will need to make sure they do not tweak it again. The best yoga instructors will usually be able to help pain sufferers find a particular workout routine.

Massage, while not strictly an exercise, is a genuinely excellent way to relieve pain in the lower back area. Professionals in the industry can work the knots out of the muscle tissue so that the whole area heals faster. If the problem happens to be with a pinched nerve, experts can also knead the tissue around the nerve so that it regains its normal function as soon as possible.

In terms of strength training to prevent pain in this part of the body, there are a number of excellent exercises to engage in. For example, using a rowing machine will really give the back muscles a workout. Alternatively, if men and women live near a body of water and are quite brave, they can also row in the open water. By working the back muscles just two or three days per week, people will be much more likely to avoid pain. If they do suffer an injury, most professionals agree that they will probably heal faster.

Simple lower back pain exercises can also work. For instance, doing a few cycles of toe-touching will limber up the body and help it get into better shape. Any exercise, in fact, that requires the torso to bend over or extend itself more than usual will be a good one. Some fitness videos provide specific routines that men and women can watch and imitate. Exercise classes with friends can be a good excuse to get together and work out.

Can My Back or Neck Pain Get Better?

Even though back and neck problems are commonplace, it is a good thing that generally they can resolve on their own. In reality, the usual result of spinal pain symptoms is most favorable with or without treatment.

It is challenging to determine which treatments are or are not successful because of the body's natural tendency of spine-related pain to improve; i.e. the pain often subsides on its own regardless of whether you received any form of medical intervention. However, even with the body's natural ability to heal itself and get you out of pain, many people with back or neck pain experience pain that persists, gets worse, or comes and goes. If you are reading this article, chances are that your back or neck pain problem falls into the classification of not getting better by itself. The following is a list of the more common pain situations:

Chronic back or neck pain problems that persist for more than three months. Back or neck pain flare ups that occur from time to time over the course of several years. Back and neck pain for which spinal surgery is recommended. Back or leg pain that persists even after having spinal surgery. This type of pain is known as failed back surgery syndrome.

The aforementioned classes of pain do not resolve themselves right away and can become frustrating for you and those near you. Getting the proper information about your back or neck pain problem is your most important resource for improving your spinal health.

Many times, the appropriate timing and implementation of treatment options is the key for you to get over your pain problem with success. For instance, you may see an improvement with physiotherapy treatments that include electrotherapy, ice, and heat in conjunction with an exercise program. In some cases, you might also receive spinal decompression.

The importance of treatment integration should involve chiropractic. Chiropractic is only appropriate in certain cases. You can improve the odds of having a good outcome from chiropractic if you include psychological preparation for chiropractic treatment especially if you have never been to a chiropractor nor have any knowledge of what a doctor of chiropractic does. You can also increase your chances of success by arming yourself with the right information about your situation should you wish to avoid drugs or surgery.

During the course of chiropractic treatment, a complementary rehabilitation program will follow and include exercise, psychological evaluations, physiotherapy, and, sometimes, a referral to a doctor of medicine for surgical consideration.

Keep in mind that there is an alternative to drugs or surgery to get rid of back or neck pain.

How to Avoid Back Surgery

There are two rules you need to pay attention to in order to avoid back problems. Just because they seem like "no-brainers" don't ignore them as they are the key to staying out of trouble. 1. Whatever your age you must work at being physically fit. A reasonable diet to control your weight coupled with daily cardiovascular and mild to moderate weight training exercises will keep you trim, improve your balance and provide the muscle tone needed to support your skeleton, especially the bones in your spinal column, which are called vertebrae. It is the discs or cushions between these vertebrae that can "slip" and cause serious injury if you lift something beyond your physical ability and readiness to do so. I want to emphasize that you can never stop paying attention to these fitness principles as excessive body weight and poor balance contribute mightily to skeletal stress and your risk of sustaining a skeletal injury. 2. How you lift, to include the posture with which you approach the item to be lifted, is crucial to preventing a back injury. Before you attempt to lift anything make sure you follow these steps:

Is the item to be lifted too much to handle without the assistance of a loading or lifting tool or another person? If you think you can handle the weight of the item without assistance, face the item squarely.Move close to the item to get the right leverage and once again make sure it is an item you believe you can handle without injuryYour knees should be fully bent and your back should be rigid and your arm and leg muscles in a "ready to lift" mode before you actually begin to lift the item.LIFT WITH YOU LEGS, NOT YOUR BACK AND KEEP YOUR BACK RIGID - failure to adhere to this crucial lifting posture is where most of the injuries occur. Finally, using the proper lifting procedure, make a split second and final determination as to whether you can handle the item. If you can't, do not play the hero - let it go and get some help.

I have practiced these basics ever since my surgery (38 years) and so far so good. Anyone who has had serious and chronic back pain and/or surgery and wants to substantially reduce the risk of a back injury should follow my advice. If you are in doubt or want additional information there are plenty of additional resources out there that will provide additional and more granular information on back care. And of course if you are under the care of a physician that you trust you can seek their feedback as well.

5 Ways To Relieve Back Pain At Home

To learn how to relieve low back pain at home, it is important to know what you can do and cannot do with your body. Back pain can be caused by a number of ways including prolonged sitting or standing, ill-fitting shoes, and poor walking posture. The key here is not to over extend your body so every tip must be accomplished with deliberate consideration.

Keep reasonably active

One of the simplest and easiest back pain remedies at home is to keep moving. The last thing that you would want to do is hit the sack. Bed rest may only serve to aggravate the condition as laying on bed puts more stress on your already bad back. What you should do is limber up and move about as these warm and strengthen the sore muscles. Walk around the house, do chores, just make sure not to do heavy lifting, bend too far or make any sudden movement.

Learn Pilates

If you want to learn how to relieve low back pain, learn Pilates. Pilates helps to relieve your discomfort and may even prevent a recurrence as it strengthens the core muscles that support the back. Based on the principle that the body should be structurally balanced to function at the optimum level, the gentle stretching exercises and posture enhancing movements of Pilates align the body parts so that balance is achieved.

Self massage

Self massage is one of the recommended back pain remedies at home. This home relief suggestion is easier than you think, and requires only tennis balls and a thin mattress. Lay your back on the mattress, with knees bent and feet flat on the ground slip a tennis ball under your back then hold it there for a few seconds. Move the ball to a new area then hold again. If you want a more "thorough" massage, put two tennis balls inside a sock or stockings, and follow the same instructions as above.

Seat Therapy

You can do this simple treatment at home. You need a chair with back rest and a small rubber ball. Sit on the chair with your spine lengthen, and back straight and knees together with feet flat on the floor. Sit on rubber ball on your tailbone and row left to right. In this position, you are forced to sit up straight and lengthen your spine, stretching your back. Remove the ball after 5 minutes and rest.

Sit back and relax

Some conditions are merely symptoms of stress. This method in fact is the easiest to do. In fact, you are literally asked to do nothing. So for a day or two, disconnect the phones, stay offline, grab a book and play soothing music. You will feel better once your stress level goes down.

These 5 simple ways to relieve back pain at home are only for minor conditions. Most cases such nature go away after a few days. But if the discomfort is severe and lasts indefinitely, it is best that you consult a specialist and perform some back pain relief exercises.

Joanna Ng is the owner of New Back Pain Relief Exercises and teaches her clients how to relieve low back pain at home. Her back pain remedies at home have proven to be an effective antidote for most common types of back pain experienced.

Sciatica Exercises - The Importance of Stretching

BySteven Sea

People worldwide suffer from back pain and many believe that resting will solve the pain. However, this is not true as bed rest alone will worsen the condition as well as increase the pain. What is the best treatment for sciatica? The best way to combat pain as well as recovery from sciatica is doing sciatica exercises. By doing the correct exercises you will relax the back muscles as well as make them stronger and more flexible. Stretching exercises alleviates discomfort and pain and also helps prevent further episodes.

Sciatica exercises must include stretching exercises in order to reduce the pain and make the muscles in the back more flexible. When the spine is injured or is irritated the muscles go into spasm in order to support and protect the spine and hence causes discomfort and severe pain. Stretching exercises also help extend nutrients to the spine and the surrounding areas. In addition to preventing lower back pain these types of exercises promote healing.

The muscles in the back need to be stretched which should include the tendons and ligaments. The gluteus muscle in the buttocks should also be included in your sciatica exercises as well as the hamstrings which are situated at the back of the legs. Hamstring stretches lengthen any tight hamstring muscles. These stretching exercises also maintain a good posture and are highly recommended by the professionals.

For those that are suffering from sciatica symptoms should take up stretching exercises in order to prevent any further trauma or injury to the spine. Before starting your sciatica exercises regime you should relax the muscles as well as warm up the muscles before exercising. Warm ups should be done gradually so as not to hurt the area.

Those suffering from health problems, it is wise to find a proper professional back pain relief regime. The best way to manage your condition effectively is to focus by being disciplined and hands on. Remember, that by lying in bed for a week or two will not resolve your back pain. You need to do sciatica exercises and stretches in order to lessen the pain and improve the muscle tone and strength.

Sciatica pain can be controlled by doing sciatica exercises. Such exercises are meant for one leg only and does not need to be done for the opposite leg as sciatica only affect one leg. The leg that is affected is the leg that requires exercise.

The bottom line is that almost everyone will experience lower back pain sometime in their lives.

It is one of the leading causes of absences from work, too, not to mention interfering with daily life. Seeing a doctor is therefore, highly recommended in order to treat your problem. There are numerous symptoms that accompany lumbago, such as stiffness in the lower back. Also, one can feel tingling sensations in the lower legs and even into the feet. Spinal curvatures can develop because the body adapts to the pain as it best can.

Heavy lifting is often the culprit, as is incorrect lifting. However, arthritis may be the problem, as well. Other culprits include scoliosis, osteoporosis, tumors, herniated discs, and more. Usually, x-ray machines are used to diagnose the problem, but sometimes it calls for an MRI.

After determining the root problem, treatment can begin. Usually, the most common recommendations will be stretching, exercising and massage. Pain relievers will also be suggested, which you probably already have. However, some cases that are more severe will call for painkillers and even ant-inflammatory medication, which is meant to reduce swelling.

Anti-depressants are sometimes prescribed for patients with chronic or extreme pain, in an effort to help them mentally cope with their problem. You could also try topical ointments, and switching hot and cold compresses. Acupuncture is another alternative treatment that can provide relief in some patients. After all other treatments are attempted, surgery may be recommended for some patients.

A good understanding of what is lumbago and the particular condition you suffer from will help you make wiser decisions. Together with your doctor, you can come up with a treatment plan that will work in your favor. Doing so will help you return to a more normal life once again.

Don't suffer in silence with Lumbago, there are treatments out there to make your life bearable again.

Back Pain Symptoms - What Do They Indicate?

ByAlbertina Belmont

Some of the commonest back pain symptoms include stiffness, sudden pain on movement, or a dull "stony" feeling at the lower part of the back. There is no one reason for the symptoms. It can be anything from a simple muscle sprain or straining of spine chord due to incorrect posture to something serious like lumbar herniated disc or degenerative disc disease.

Back pain cases are increasing at an alarming rate in the United States. About four out of five people here suffer from some form of back discomfort or pain. The matter of concern is that many people tend to ignore the symptoms and avoid timely treatment. They continue living with the pain, thinking that it will pass.

The scary thing is that severe cases that need medical intervention like herniated disc or degenerated disc might go completely ignored. This is because they cause no back pain symptoms! Your back muscles may continue to degenerate and you may not know what's going on behind your back, literally!

On the other hand, a simple muscle spasm or strain may cause a shooting pain, which hinders your normal movement. You may rush to the doctor only to find that you sat with a slouch or lifted an object with a jerk that caused your back to scream!

Lower Back Pain Types

• Acute pain: It lasts only for a few days or weeks. But, if you ignore the back pain symptoms for long, the pain can get serious and may hinder your daily movement.
• Chronic pain: It continues for several months. Such pain can either increase with time, or may appear as a shooting pain occasionally and then reduce to a dull pain. Sometimes, it gets difficult to dig the exact cause of such pain. People often tend to ignore this pain and try to "adjust" it in their busy routine.

Back Pain Treatment

Treatment may vary according to your symptoms. It's important to discuss with your doctor about the causes and alternative treatments for the pain. You can choose over-the-counter or prescribed painkillers, or choose natural therapy, or combine both. It depends on the condition of your back.

Certain cases may require surgery like lumbar fusion or microdiscectomy, which is a surgery with minimal invasion. You must talk to your surgeon about the after-care and recovery time, along with the risks involved, before choosing this form of treatment. You can alleviate some back pain symptoms through physical therapy.

Massages and acupuncture are two popular techniques to tackle back pain. It's wise to collect information on them before choosing the therapy. Always have a trained practitioner for the techniques, lest your pain may worsen. It's possible to manage back pain with timely and proper treatment and care.

What Is A Niggling Injury?

In the lexicon, the term niggling refers to an item or a condition that is quite petty but is extremely irritating. It can pertain to a variety of incidents, pests, materials and even to people's personalities that exist in a minute way but are still impossibly frustrating to have. But in the medical field, particularly in sports medicine, this kind of injury is a minor type but is very much difficult to treat. This is because a niggling injury sometimes has something to do with your body's mechanical system and some imbalances.

A niggling injury may be characterized by a variety of painful incidents. You may experience sore ankles, stiff necks, shoulder pains, muscle spasms and leg pains. Slipped discs and knee injuries may also be causes of a niggling injury. Sometimes, you may fail to brand them as a niggling injury because a little of the pain stops after quite a few medications. But this kind of injury is recurrent. In fact, you may experience it repeatedly over a long period of time.

Sports are usually the cause of niggling injuries. The muscles in your body are stretched and pressured sometimes well beyond their usual limit. This would cause mechanical imbalances in your body and soreness where too much pressure has been applied. It is important that you seek a doctor immediately if pain that you associate with a sports injury has been persistent for a long time already regardless of the medications you take.

Even exercise routines can cause a niggling injury so it is essential that you mix the right amount of the different exercises. Focus on muscle strength and conditioning as well to enable your body to get used to the idea of pressure and weight on it. This would help you avoid instances where most parts of your body would have difficulty answering to the pressure from your external environment and thus would break or be injured.

Treating a niggling injury has to come from within the body to ensure that the particular imbalance or malfunction in the mechanical system is cured. In this case, seeking an osteopath for recommended treatments may be a good option to consider. Since osteopathy deals with the entire body's parts and functions, you can undergo treatments that would promote harmonious relationship among your bodily systems to ensure that they are working perfectly well together toward your good health status. Ask your skilled osteopath about treating your niggling injury.

How To Treat a Pinched Nerve in Your Lower Back

A pinched nerve in your lower back is also called nerve entrapment, or nerve compression. In layman terms, it is a sore part of the body. A pinched nerve in the lower back may cause anywhere from mild pain and minor discomfort to severe soreness that makes any type of movement excruciatingly painful. Anyone who has experienced the ordeal knows that you would want it to go away, as soon as possible.

Factors Affecting Pinched Nerve

A pinched nerve in the body may be caused by a number of factors. Poor posture where weight is unevenly distributed may result in lower back pain as muscles tend to compensate for the imbalance. Same goes with wearing shoes that do not offer good arch support as the pressure of your body weight is transferred from the arches of the feet to your lower back. Stress is also a known cause of lower back pain. Other factors include obesity, Morton's toe and foot misalignment, uneven leg lengths, prolonged sitting, and in more extreme cases by slipped vertebrae or a concussion on the spinal cord.

Chronic vs Acute Pain

To treat a pinched nerve in your lower back, first you have to know whether it falls under the acute or the chronic categories. Acute pain is pain that lasts for less than 3 months. These cases may be treated with back pain home remedies. Meanwhile, chronic pain is pain that is longer than 3 months. This usually requires a more intensive treatment preferably by a nerve doctor or a rehabilitation therapist.

Chronic lower back pain can be treated by either pressing heat or ice pack (never both, for your sake) over the affected area, or taking mild pain relievers. A gentle back rub using mild liniment may also alleviate the pain. Note that bed rest is never recommended, it will aggravate the situation. If you suspect that your condition is caused by stress, do gentle movement side to side, sit back and take plenty of me-time.

Treatment for Pinched Nerve in Lower Back

Once you have recovered, it is important that you do not suffer a relapse. Study how you can acquire the correct posture so you can evenly distribute your body weight. Engage in back pain relief exercises such as pilates exercises. Use a pair of shoes that has arch support that hugs your feet's shape. Avoid sitting or standing in the same position too long. Take time to understand how you got your pinched nerve so you can give it proper solution.

Must Knows About Back and Neck Pain

Neck Strains - Some Obvious Causes

An important factor that causes a stiff neck is sleeping position. This happens because in our sleep, we tend to remain in one position for a very long time and if the position is not proper it can cause strain in the neck. The muscles get damaged making the blood vessels to be pressed which leads to a stiff neck. Often, using pillows that are too flat or too thick can put more stress on the neck. Such a sleeping position can strain our tendons and ligaments.
The tendons can also strain when we sit for extended periods in a single position or excessively strain our neck during work or sometimes remain hunched behind the steering wheel for too many hours.
Wearing of our joints with increasing age may cause pain. Our joints suffer from wear and tear which can cause problems at our neck or back and even other parts of the body.
Nerve depression in cases such as dislocated discs, bone spurs and herniated discs causes multiple problems to the nervous system, thereby ultimately causing pain in neck and back.

Low Back pains

Approximately, we spend 33% of our lives sleeping hence having a comfortable mattress is essential. Beyond a good night's rest, it can guard us from dozens of health problems. The most important one being back pain. A soft mattress has lesser metal coils and may sink at the hip causing back pain. A high quality mattress should have around 300-400 coils. Anything fewer than that number can injure your back and trigger other side effects. Choosing the right pillow can save us from unwanted stress, specifically on the neck and shoulders. We must always select the correct level of support for our head and body.

Medical disorders

Neck or back pains often don't require a visit to the doctor's office but depending on the intensity of the pain or based upon the types of symptoms, we will have to make the call. Symptoms of a serious medical condition can be from the following list

shooting pain into your shoulder or down your arm numbness in your hands or lack of strength drastic changes in bladder and bowel movementsdifficulty breathing

Diseases like Rheumatoid Arthritis affects joints of the fingers, feet etc. Stiff neck is an indication of Meningitis, a disorder that causes inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord which impacts our nervous system. Cancerous Tumors that form near the spinal cord can also inflict pains in the neck and the back. Several problems that cause compression of nerves can cause pain in the back and if left untreated can lead to immobilization of the legs. This is a disorder called as Sciatica.

Treatment

A ordinary stiffness on the neck can be treated by getting some rest or dulling the pain by rubbing ice and hot pain relief creams to relax the muscles at the problem areas. Other stretching exercises subjecting the neck to a variety of motions will help ease the pain. A few of these exercises are neck flexion, rotating and retraction of the neck and side reflexions.

Conclusion

Supportive self care is often sufficient to have total recuperation from neck strain and low back problems but you need to see a doctor when a problem was caused by a major event such as a fall, if it has prolonged for a long time or if it occurs with a severe and unexplained symptom.

Back Pain Caused By Track And Field

As spring arrives, many people are returning to their favorite warm weather sports. For many students and adult athletes, this means a return to track and field. It is important to educate yourself about the common injuries associated with your sport in order to guard yourself against back pain and other conditions that can take you out of competition.

A number of injuries can occur during any sport. The following describes a few common injuries associated with the various activities of track and field.

Runners

Most people, whether athletes or office workers, tend to have weaker hamstrings than quadriceps. This imbalance causes the pelvis to be pulled down in front and increases the lumbar arch. As the back arches in more, the discs in between vertebrae are compressed unevenly and the spinal joints are strained. Combined with the jolting force your body experiences as your feet pound against the ground when running, joint and disc problems become likely. Weak hamstrings are also susceptible to strains. Runners should take special care to ensure their quads and hamstrings are balanced in strength and flexibility.

Another muscle group runners should be aware of is the hip flexor group, particularly the psoas. This muscle is used when bringing the thigh and upper body closer together. The psoas connects the lumbar spine to the thigh bone and is used heavily when running. Tight, inflexible psoas muscles pull down on the pelvis and create the exaggerated lumbar arch that tight quads create. Running without regaining flexibility of the psoas will likely worsen its rigidity and exacerbate pelvic misalignment, which in turn causes lower back pain.

Regular stretching and myofascial release can help achieve muscles that are balanced in strength and flexibility. The assistance of a physical therapist is beneficial to people with sports injuries.

Hurdlers

Muscle strains are common among hurdlers, especially in the groin and thigh. Groin strain is generally a sign of either bad form or overuse. If you feel groin pain on the side of your trail leg, you may be swinging your leg out too far or too late. If the pain is on the side of your lead leg, you may be doing too many drills with the hurdles close together.

Hamstring strains are a common overuse injury acquired by hurdlers. The hamstring of the lead leg undergoes an eccentric contraction during a hurdle jump, which means it contracts as it is being lengthened by the leg's straightening. This type of contraction comes with a high risk of muscle tearing. The trail leg works hard to push the body off the ground. Hamstring strain is a sign to stop, rest, and warm up sufficiently before practicing.

More troubling than a simple muscle strain, hurdlers have to watch out for sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction. The sacroiliac joints form where the hip bones meet the sacrum at the base of the spine.
Injuries to the SI joints generally occur when the muscles and ligaments that support them are weakened, torn or tightened. The tremendous forces sustained by the pelvis when pushing off the ground can, over time, destabilize the pelvis, causing significant joint pain. Proper form, adequate rest time, good conditioning and sufficient warmup time can help prevent this condition.

Throwers

Whether it's a javelin, discus or shot put, throwers are susceptible to similar injuries. Throwers in track and field use muscles throughout the whole body to build momentum; javelin throwers run, while shot putters and discus throwers spin.

The most common throwing injury occurs to the shoulder. Rotator cuff injuries affect the set of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder, giving it stability and allowing up-and-down and rotational movement of the arm. Repeated throwing can cause tears to the muscles or tendons.

Hip and lower back strains may also occur in throwers, particularly discus throwers and shot putters who twist their bodies as part of their throw. Javelin throwers may also strain muscles throughout the back when lunging forward to throw the javelin.

The best defense against throwing injuries is to avoid overworking your arm and back. Know your limits and take adequate rest periods between practices.

Many sports injuries can be prevented with warmup, conditioning, self-myofascial release and the willingness to give your body the time it needs to recover. Whatever your track and field activity, approach it in a way that will allow you to enjoy your sport for many years to come.
