When Does Someone Need Back Surgery?

ByTamara H. Thomas

Back pain is a very common disease in these days. Surgery is usually the last resort to curing a problem. Therefore, this option may sometimes be chosen if the conditions become severe.

The most common causes of back pain are trauma, improper body mechanics and aging. Pressure on the nerves in the center of the spine and the normal wear and tear of the back due to age can cause severe back aches and other problems. Every person having back pain may contemplate whether back surgery will help or not.

Back surgery is not required in most cases and a very few percentage of cases rely on surgery as a treatment requirement. Most of the cases can be dealt without having surgery and relying on medication will often be enough. The conditions which indicate a back surgery can include:

• If conditions exists of nerve compression in the spine and a feeling of numbness along the back and leg
• In some cases where the rubbery cushions in the back are ruptured
• If the spinal column is unstable due to a severe fracture of spine
• Osteoporosis can also require back surgery
• If someone has tried other medication and there is no effect on their pain, then back surgery can be opted as an option.

Bone deformations can also cause a need for rear surgery. Kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, radiculopathy, scoliosis, spinal stenosis are the most common degenerative diseases that affect the spine. Degenerative disk disease also falls in this category which can be the cause of such pain which results in the need of back surgery.

Injuries to the spinal column might cause a severe bone fracture to the vertebral column. The bone density is reduced in osteoporosis and this disease is becoming very common. Vertebrae can also become weak and therefore they can become fractured and collapsed. These fractured vertebrae usually cause no problem and heal with time but if the spinal column becomes unstable, then the back surgeon might suggest back surgery.

The methods which are used by the back surgeons are usually bone grafting or they will try fusing two or more vertebrae together. This can be used with the help of metal plates, rods, screws and cages.

There are various deformities of the spinal column in which back surgery becomes a necessity. This includes when any of the following happens:

• curvature of spine
• slipping of the spinal center
• arthritis causes the vertebral column to become narrow and causes severe pain
• inflammation of a nerve in the spine

Overall, a patient who has back pain should not opt for surgery immediately. This is not a simple thing and proper care must be taken in this regard. Therefore, back surgery must be chosen only if the conditions become extremely severe and the back surgeon suggests this.
