Possible Herniated Disk Treatment Options

ByJ. Hughes

There are two primary goals of herniated disk treatment. The first goal is to relieve pain, especially if the pain is severe and debilitating. As for the second goal, the treatment is to help the patient return to a normal level of functioning. Treatment methods depend on a variety of factors. For example, most doctors form a treatment plan based on each patient's symptoms, age and activity level. As long as the problem is not severe, the treatments will begin conservatively. If necessary, the doctor may choose to take a more aggressive approach.

Most patients recover in a few short months after receiving conservative treatment. During the healing process, patients must avoid painful positions. Conservative treatment plans usually involve exercising and pain medication. A physical therapist recommends exercises based on the patient's level of ability. When done right, the exercises can lessen the pain that comes from having a herniated disk. As the pain lessens, physical therapy can help the patient begin to rebuild core strength and stability. Strengthening muscles is also a way for people to prevent future injuries.

Herniated disks tend to heal over time. While a patient is healing, the doctor may prescribe medication for pain relief. The medication also controls inflammation. Pain that doesn't improve with over-the-counter medications may require the use of narcotics or muscle relaxers. Since they have fewer side effects, doctors may choose to prescribe nerve pain medication. Another treatment option is the use of cortisone injections. Since they treat inflammation, the doctor inserts cortisone injections near the spinal nerves. Some doctors use spinal imaging to guide the needle.

If conservative treatment fails, surgery may become the best option for herniated disk treatment. There are times when a disk fragment can lodge into the spinal cord. When this occurs, the patient usually grows weaker as the days go by. Some of the problems that the patient may experience include trouble walking, standing or sitting. Fortunately, doctors can perform surgery to remove the bulging portion of the disk. In rare cases, the doctor may need to remove the entire disk during surgery. When this occurs, the doctor may implant an artificial disk for spinal stability.

Rest is another important part of the treatment process. Whether the treatment was conservative or aggressive, the patient must rest. Patients should reduce their activities for a short time. Along with that, they should also avoid heavy lifting. After the initial rest period, they can begin to increase their activities at a gradual pace. It is never wise to resume activities all at once. Patients who don't take time to rest will increase their odds of developing another injury.

All patients who develop a herniated disk must make lifestyle changes. Eating healthy and exercising on a regular basis is important. Patients will find that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is an excellent way to lessen back pain. A physical therapist works with each patient to teach helpful exercises. If patients complete these exercises regularly, they will increase the flexibility in their spine and legs. In addition, the exercises are a way to strengthen the muscles that support the spine. Another important lifestyle change involves learning how to lift things properly. Lifting heavy objects the wrong way is one of the quickest ways to develop a herniated disk.

Causes, Prevention and Treatment Options For Low Back Pain

Do you know what is the most prevalent cause of missed work? Low back pain! About 50% of all working people have this problem. About 31 million people in the USA have low back ache at any moment, according to the American Chiropractic Association.

The same institution says that as much as $50 billion every year is spent on back pain treatments in the USA alone.

Causes of Low Back Pain

Here are the most widespread causes of back pain (not counting accidents and sports injuries):

Poor postureObesityPoor physical conditioning due to inactivityOsteoporosisEmotional/psychological stress

Preventing Low Back Pain

The best way to prevent this pain is to keep your back and ab muscles strong. Do this by exercising regularly.

Other tips include:

Any strenuous physical activity must be preceded by stretching. When lifting heavy objects, do it with your legs while keeping your back straight.Support your back when bending over.Avoid slouching when sitting or standing.Get chairs and car sits with lumbar supportWhen sitting for prolonged time, try switching sitting positions frequently. Also, walk around from time to time.Sleep on a firm surface and make a habit to do it on your side to prevent curve in your spine. You must control your weight.Get enough vitamin D on a daily basis to keep your spine and other bones strong.Wear low-heeled shoes.Stop smoking because it causes the spinal discs to degenerate.

Treating Low Back Pain

Your first step when experiencing acute back pain is to visit a qualified chiropractor. Chiropractors have excellent knowledge of musculoskeletal management. They are much safer, and less costly than standard medical treatments that include drugs and surgery.

According to an article in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2007, if self-care treatments do not produce any results, people with acute low back pain should opt for spinal adjustment.

The same source also said that in case of chronic pain, the following remedies should be tried: exercise therapy, massage therapy, spinal manipulation, acupuncture, yoga, intensive rehabilitation.

Another cure people with this problem can try is NST or neuro-structural integration technique. This non-invasive technique stimulates your body to heal itself. This safe method produces visible and long lasting results after just 2-3 sessions.

You can also make use of massage to ease pain. Massage triggers your body to release endorphins that not only brings on relaxation and reduces levels of stress but it also relieves pain.

One more very effective way to relieve back pain is to use this portable TENS unit. This FDA-cleared TENS unit is available without prescription and it provides instant pain relief - the very first time you use it, your pain will go away. Treatment of Sciatica

A combination of pressure and inflammation on the nerve root can cause sciatic nerve pain and several treatments can relieve these factors. Although surgery may be needed in cases where the spinal column or cord has already been damaged, most treatments are non-invasive and fairly easy.

Commonly, sciatica pain is treated with pain killers such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Due to their high risk for addiction, opiate-based pain killers are only utilized as a last resort. In addition, doctors are also recommending routine exercise to treat sciatica pain, as by stretching and strengthening your back and leg muscles, you can release the pressure on the sciatic nerve. But the best treatment by far for sciatica pain is to alter certain habits in your lifestyle that may contribute to the pain, in order to prevent or alleviate sciatica symptoms.

Bad posture could be adding a lot of extra stress on your spine, disks, muscles, ligaments, joints, and nerves; so simply by altering your posture, you can minimize sciatica pain and back injuries. Be sure not to slouch while sitting or leaning too far back or sitting too straight. You also want to keep your head aligned and not too far forward. The human head weighs roughly 15 pounds and if not properly supported by the neck, can cause a significant amount of stress on the muscles, ligaments, disks, and spine. It is crucial to have good back support as well by getting a chair that offers proper back support. Be sure to take breaks every thirty to sixty minutes to ensure that you are not sitting too long.

Take a minute to assess how you're standing. Is your pelvis pushed forward or backward or your shoulders hanging forward? How you stand can also impact your sciatic nerve. Try to avoid standing for prolonged periods of time, in order to avoid common sciatica symptoms, and be sure you're standing straight with your feet slightly apart. If you're not certain that you are standing straight, be sure that your shoulders are aligned with your ears. Keep your chin parallel to the ground and you can be sure that you're standing up straight.

When you're sleeping, posture matters too. It is bad for your back to sleep with pillows propping you up, sleep on your stomach, or on a sagging mattress. While lying on your back, you can keep your spine in correct alignment by putting a pillow beneath your knees to keep them slightly elevated. While sleeping on your side, you can place a pillow between your knees. Your pillow should be the proper density to keep your head aligned with your spine, without being too low or too high. In addition, your pillow should give your neck the proper support while sleeping on your back.

Try improving your posture, if you're looking for a natural treatment for sciatica pain. Proper exercise is also crucial as part of a natural sciatica treatment plan. Building up your muscles will help to avert them pressing on your sciatic nerve, and thus you can decrease or avoid sciatica symptoms altogether.

Spine Treatment for Back Pain and Other Complications

ByRobert S Forest

When someone develops back pain, they may worry about a spine complication and the next thing they will think of is seeking for spine treatment. Many people who experience back pain choose to depend on over the counter painkillers to relieve pain. While painkillers may work to bring relief, the back pain may be more complex than the person may think. Most back pain complications are related to the spine and therefore require more attention. They will need to see a spine specialist for diagnosis and spine treatment.

Once someone realizes that the situation they are going through requires spinal treatment then they ought to find the right place from where their health case can be attended. Whereas some patients can be seen locally by specialists where treatment is locally available, some may have to travel overseas in such of spine doctors who can diagnose and provide treatment to their health cases.

Back pain and spine conditions come in different levels of severity. The kind of treatment that a patient will need will depend on how severe the spine condition has been diagnosed. Non-serious or mild spine disorders will only need medical subscription. Other back pain cases like musculoskeletal conditions and related sicknesses, and even serious disorders of the spine can also be managed with oral medication without surgery. Some back pain is so severe that it can even make patients unable to walk any longer. These conditions need high class equipment for diagnosis, which include MRI and CT scanners. Therapy combined with the state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment helps in achieving effective spine treatment.

When the severity of the spinal condition requires that surgery be carried out then the patient has to find somewhere the surgical operation can be done effectively. They will need to be seen in a hospital where they can receive comprehensive treatment; effective diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical as well as rehabilitation services.

If the treatment process involves surgery, it is advisable to take as much time as needed until the patient has healed completely before getting involved in body straining activities. Spine surgery is a critical procedure and therefore the doctors will advice the patient on when they are fully healed and hence travel or walk without further complications.

Spin surgeries are very critical and therefore people must be watchful to note and should be fast to report any possible complications. Failure of treatment of these disorders may lead to even worse complications. Timely management will ensure that the spine treatment process is cheaper and more effective.

Spine treatment is therefore a process which can be handled differently depending on the condition of the patient and the severity of the case. While medication without surgery has been seen to work for many patients of this kind of health condition, spine surgery is still the most effective method of relieving back pain and spine complications.

Short and Long Term Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica treatment comes in two forms; the first is the treatment that you want right away to relieve you of the pain that you are suffering. Secondly you will need treatment to completely alleviate the sciatica and ensure that it does not come back.

I am going to assume that you have seen a doctor and identified the source of your sciatica and ruled out any of the more serious possible causes like a tumor, abscess or blood clot that would require immediate hospital attention. If your doctor has told you that it is a slipped disc and there is not much he can do for it, except give you pain killers and tell you to rest, there are several forms of treatment that you can do for yourself.

Cold treatment. First of all apply some ice or a cold pack to the lower back at the root of the problem. This will help reduce the inflammation of the sciatic nerve and the muscles in the area, as well as numbing the pain to some extent. You can apply the cold pack for 10 minutes and then off for 10 and then repeat this two or three times. This can continue to be applied for the first 48 hours.

Packets of frozen peas make very good cold packs, as they as mold around your bodies contours.

Stretching treatment. Once you are able to move, you should immediately start to stretch the muscles that contribute to your sciatic pain. These are the Piriformis and Hamstring muscles. The Piriformis runs through your buttocks and is often guilty of putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. The Hamstrings are the large muscles at the back of the thighs that run from your buttocks to the back of your knees. Tightness in the Hamstrings contributes to lower back problems. Yoga type stretches are ideal for this and you can find instructions and diagrams on how to perform the stretches on web sites that specialize in sciatica and back pain.

Moving treatment. You need to start moving as soon as you can. You will notice that your sciatic pain and stiffness is worse when you first get up in the morning or after you have been sitting for an extended length of time. So it is best to move. I'm not suggesting you try the four minute mile, but gentle walking and swimming are good for relieving the pain and improving the muscles.

This set of combined treatments should have alleviated the worst of your pain. You now need to concentrate on treatments to improve your muscles and balance to ensure that you do not trigger another sciatica attack.

In order to do this you should continue to practice the Yoga type stretches to maintain flexibility in the muscles and joints. Pilates style exercise is good for strengthening the core muscles of the back and abdomen, which will support your spine when it is under strain.

You should also pay attention to improving your posture when standing sitting or lying in bed. When standing or lying down use some appropriate support in the small of your back or under your legs to ensure your spine stays in a good position and does not slouch.

The Best Treatment for Sciatica Pain

There are so many options when it comes to pain treatment that many people wonder what is . We feel pain in so many different places and for so many different reasons it is very difficult to decide the best treatment for sciatica or any other pain.

There are several steps you should take before you even ask yourself what the best treatment option would be. Before even trying to determine you must know why you have sciatic pain in the first place. Diagnosis is the very first step in any treatment program you might be interested in.

I cannot stress this enough, go see a health care professional to diagnose the cause of your pain. A thorough examination should be done before you even consider treatment options. The best treatment option will depend on what you find in the examination. Once you know the cause of the pain talk over your treatment options with your Doctor.

Each person's pain is specific to that particular person and what works well for one person might not work well for another. Proper research on your part to educate yourself on all the options out there will greatly enhance your chance to find for your particular situation.

You may find the best treatment is a change in lifestyle or you may find the best treatment will be a surgical procedure. You have many options and knowing as many options as you have available will go a long way in helping you decide which treatment you wish to follow.

Anyone who tries to tell you without knowing your particular situation is as likely to cause you more harm than good. I regularly see so-called experts touting this or that treatment as a cure-all and I wonder just how many people have taken that advice and not received the relief they are seeking.

While it is important for you to know your options it is much more important for you to truly understand the underlying cause before you try any of those options. I always recommend taking a list of treatment options you have researched with you on your visit to your health care provider. This will allow you to go over all your options and find the best treatment for sciatica that will work for you. Remember you are an individual and your pain is as individual as you are and no "one size fits all" approach will work when you are seeking relief.

It is up to you to take the initiative and review all your options so you can make an informed decision that will work best for you. It's your pain and it's your body you must make the decision for yourself. Once you have decided the best option then you can go on and put it into practice.

Whiplash Injuries: Symptoms and Treatment

ByJanet Parks

The unfortunate reality of our mobile society is that there are fewer licensed drivers that have never been in an automobile accident. The more years of driving experience a person has, the more likely it is they have been involved in some sort of car accident. The U.S. Census Bureau last estimated that $10.2 million motor vehicle accidents occurred in 2008 alone. These accidents, ranging from minor fender benders to full-on collisions, are leading contributors to whiplash and concussions treated by chiropractors and physicians throughout the US. There is a rising number of bicyclists on the roadways, and whiplash caused by car accidents can be attributed to car-to-bicycle collisions.

Whiplash, car accident related or not, happens when the sudden change in the body's velocity stretches the muscles and ligaments in the neck beyond normal range. It can occur to both motorists and cyclists involved in collisions. Anybody suffering from symptoms of whiplash should seek whiplash treatment from a chiropractor to help ease pain and stiffness and decrease risk of long-term damage.

To understand the importance of whiplash treatment, read on for information on its causes, symptoms and diagnosis.

Whiplash: The Causes

There are many different causes of whiplash. Car accident injuries are the most common, but sports injuries, bicycle crashes and other accidents can also result in similar neck pain and stiffness.

In an accident where a car is side-swiped, for example, the impact causes the body to fly to the side quickly, with the head following the body's movements. Sudden stopping of the car flings the head to the other side, often resulting in the head hitting a window. This can leave the spine and soft tissues in the neck unstable, requiring a series of chiropractic appointments for whiplash treatment, or maybe even medical treatment for concussion.

Whiplash: The Symptoms

The majority of whiplash cases involve injuries to the soft tissue in the spine, rather than broken neck bones. The symptoms of soft tissue injuries can range from obvious to obscure. The more obvious symptoms include headaches, neck and/or shoulder pain, upper body stiffness, vertigo and pain in the jaw or face. Less obvious whiplash symptoms include ringing in the ears, nausea, difficulty swallowing, and blurred vision. Talk to a chiropractor immediately if experiencing any of these whiplash symptoms.

Whiplash: Diagnosing and Treatment

A qualified chiropractor will ask various questions to determine the extent of the neck injury before starting any whiplash treatment. These questions may include: why you think you have whiplash; car accident details, details about your injury, and the nature of your symptoms. An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan, X-rays, or a CT (computed tomography) scan combined with a myelogram may also be conducted if the injuries seem severe.

Treatment for whiplash can last from a few weeks to months, depending on the severity of the injuries. A chiropractor, physician or physical therapist may use a variety of techniques to help relieve the symptoms and improve overall spine health. These techniques may include one or a combination of: chiropractic adjustments, cold & heat therapy, massage, strength training or body mechanics training. Anti-inflammatory drugs or pain relievers may be prescribed if whiplash sufferers need additional pain relief.

It is important that whiplash treatment is sought immediately if one thinks they may be suffering from whiplash, car accident related or not. Bicycle accidents and sports injuries may not always seem like obvious causes of whiplash, but active cyclists should take the time to receive whiplash treatment if they think a neck injury has occurred. A chiropractor can develop a treatment plan suited for any type of neck or spine injury resulting in whiplash.

Have you recently experienced whiplash from a car accident or sports injury? If so, visit the website for Mississippi Chiropractic, a Portland, OR chiropractic clinic. They can help you set up a plan to treat your whiplash, relieve pain, and strengthen your neck and spine.
