Hydrotherapy for Back Pain

There are two ways that water can help to ease the pain in your back.

Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy as a natural remedy that has been around thousands of years. It has been used to treat and prevent a wide range of health issues including back pain. Specialists believe that the stimulating effects of the water create energy shifts within the body. It works due to fact that the skin passes waste products out of our body and allows certain products to be absorbed into our body

The main purpose of our skin is to keep our temperature stable so any changes to the external temperature of our skin will cause a reaction inside our body. An Epsom Salt bath is especially good for relieving back pain due to the bodies reaction to the temperature of the water and the magnesium that is absorbed through the skin. The magnesium reduces muscle inflammation and therefore reduces the pain.

There are a number of techniques that can be used to reduce back pain. One way to increase circulation and reduce pain is to take alternate long hot and then short cold showers, directing the water spay on the problem area. You can apply a hot compress to the area and follow it up with a cold water spray. Our you can take a hot bath followed by a cold shower. Using any of these methods two or three times in a row will generally help to relieve your pain.

If you suffer from back spasms one method that will help is to moisten some towels with cold water and place them in you freezer to make the really cold. Then take a long hot bath and then lay down on the frozen towels. Your body will react to the extreme cold and in no time at all will warm up from the inside and this will eliminate the spasms.

If you are aware of the different techniques of and how to use them you will be able to reduce your pain and get back control of your health.

Drinking Water

The truth of the matter is that the majority of people are dehydrated. Dehydration is a chronic condition that can bring about a number of issues within our bodies and one of the most common is back pain. When your body is dehydrated it send out is signal to say that you are thirsty. The problem is we tend to ignore that signal and then our body has to find a stronger signal to send us. Back pain can occur as the result of your muscles becoming dehydrated.

Too overcome this type of back pain you must hydrate your body. This is an easy thing to do but you must keep it up to ensure your body stays hydrated. To fully hydrate your body you need to be drinking half an ounce of water for every pound of body weight. You also need to add some sea salt to the water as this will help it to stay inside your body longer.

Drinking water this way will help to improve your back pain issues and you may also notice a change in your overall general health as your body regains its natural balance.

Whiplash Injuries: Symptoms and Treatment

ByJanet Parks

The unfortunate reality of our mobile society is that there are fewer licensed drivers that have never been in an automobile accident. The more years of driving experience a person has, the more likely it is they have been involved in some sort of car accident. The U.S. Census Bureau last estimated that $10.2 million motor vehicle accidents occurred in 2008 alone. These accidents, ranging from minor fender benders to full-on collisions, are leading contributors to whiplash and concussions treated by chiropractors and physicians throughout the US. There is a rising number of bicyclists on the roadways, and whiplash caused by car accidents can be attributed to car-to-bicycle collisions.

Whiplash, car accident related or not, happens when the sudden change in the body's velocity stretches the muscles and ligaments in the neck beyond normal range. It can occur to both motorists and cyclists involved in collisions. Anybody suffering from symptoms of whiplash should seek whiplash treatment from a chiropractor to help ease pain and stiffness and decrease risk of long-term damage.

To understand the importance of whiplash treatment, read on for information on its causes, symptoms and diagnosis.

Whiplash: The Causes

There are many different causes of whiplash. Car accident injuries are the most common, but sports injuries, bicycle crashes and other accidents can also result in similar neck pain and stiffness.

In an accident where a car is side-swiped, for example, the impact causes the body to fly to the side quickly, with the head following the body's movements. Sudden stopping of the car flings the head to the other side, often resulting in the head hitting a window. This can leave the spine and soft tissues in the neck unstable, requiring a series of chiropractic appointments for whiplash treatment, or maybe even medical treatment for concussion.

Whiplash: The Symptoms

The majority of whiplash cases involve injuries to the soft tissue in the spine, rather than broken neck bones. The symptoms of soft tissue injuries can range from obvious to obscure. The more obvious symptoms include headaches, neck and/or shoulder pain, upper body stiffness, vertigo and pain in the jaw or face. Less obvious whiplash symptoms include ringing in the ears, nausea, difficulty swallowing, and blurred vision. Talk to a chiropractor immediately if experiencing any of these whiplash symptoms.

Whiplash: Diagnosing and Treatment

A qualified chiropractor will ask various questions to determine the extent of the neck injury before starting any whiplash treatment. These questions may include: why you think you have whiplash; car accident details, details about your injury, and the nature of your symptoms. An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan, X-rays, or a CT (computed tomography) scan combined with a myelogram may also be conducted if the injuries seem severe.

Treatment for whiplash can last from a few weeks to months, depending on the severity of the injuries. A chiropractor, physician or physical therapist may use a variety of techniques to help relieve the symptoms and improve overall spine health. These techniques may include one or a combination of: chiropractic adjustments, cold & heat therapy, massage, strength training or body mechanics training. Anti-inflammatory drugs or pain relievers may be prescribed if whiplash sufferers need additional pain relief.

It is important that whiplash treatment is sought immediately if one thinks they may be suffering from whiplash, car accident related or not. Bicycle accidents and sports injuries may not always seem like obvious causes of whiplash, but active cyclists should take the time to receive whiplash treatment if they think a neck injury has occurred. A chiropractor can develop a treatment plan suited for any type of neck or spine injury resulting in whiplash.

Have you recently experienced whiplash from a car accident or sports injury? If so, visit the website for Mississippi Chiropractic, a Portland, OR chiropractic clinic. They can help you set up a plan to treat your whiplash, relieve pain, and strengthen your neck and spine.

Why Wear Braces For Back Pain Relief: 6 Reasons

Of late, back pain has become a common problem among people of all ages due to erratic lifestyles and work conditions. Cervical and lumbar spondilytis is now commonly seen in all age groups and can have some very negative results in the long run. In fact degenerative spinal conditions like osteoporosis and scoliosis, seen mostly in post-menopausal women, are one of the prime causes of worry nowadays.

That's why many orthopedic surgeons advise patients to wear braces to get relief from lumbar muscle strain or herniated discs. The other reasons for using braces are as follows:

• Braces give supportive resistance to your sacral and lumbar spine, ensuring that it is kept straight and reduces inter-vertebral pressure. Increased pressure between the vertebrae usually results in spondylosis and can be quite painful.

• Unnecessary movements that you make can cause lower back pain. Braces restrict that. Moreover, muscle strain or disc injury is bio mechanically off loaded by increased intercavitary pressure when you use braces.

• The corsets available in the market are stretchable and come with internal panels which support your entire lower back. The rigid types of braces that totally immobilize the lower back are most effective in tackling accident-induced injuries.

• If you have undergone major surgery of the lower spine, using a brace in the post-surgical period will only help lessen the pain. The Bauerfeind brace is widely used in such cases because it is flexible and allows you to lift objects by bending correctly. This involves your legs and not your back. You can also avoid muscle strain and your healing will be much faster also. This would also prevent further internal injury.

• As a sedentary worker, you are used to using a table-and-chair concept of working all the time. This usually leads to slouching, which over prolonged periods can lead to scoliosis or permanent spine curvature. A brace will keep the spine straight to prevent lower back pain, usually associated with people working regularly in offices.

• In case you have a herniated disc, you will need to use a brace most certainly. This will compress and reinforce the back and also help you maintain a correct posture. Various types of braces are available depending on the degree of the hernia and these include: Ossur FormFit Advanced Back Brace, Mueller's Brace or Ten-inch Pro Care Criss-Cross Support. The Muller's brace is effective in giving relief to pain and is designed for the same.
The others are more widely used to arrest degenerative spinal conditions like scoliosis.

Braces, by and large, are being now used by more and more patients who suffer from back problems and cannot sit for long periods without ample back support. Relief from back pain usually comes medication surgery, physiotherapy, exercises, yoga or through back braces. These have only functioned as auxiliaries to other ways of treatment and prove to be reasonably effective for all age groups. However, it is always prudent to remember that size and correct fit are most essential when selecting braces.
