Neck Pain - Common Neck Pain Causes

ByJack Woo D

There are many common neck pain causes and some are the result of injury to soft tissues like muscles, tendons and ligaments. Neck pain goes hand in hand with shoulder pain and both can be experienced based on a number of reasons. There are three major reasons for neck pain namely the activities people acquire in routine life, injury on or near the neck and other medical conditions.

Activities Causing Neck Pain

Most people suffer from this condition because of repeated or prolonged postures while carrying out activities. These postures put strain on the neck and shoulder region causing strain, sprain or spasm in the neck muscles and joints. A few positions that can result in a number of neck pains include the following:

- While working, reading, writing or just watching TV some people hold their head in a forward position. This happens unknowingly and results in neck pain requiring treatment.

- Sleeping in a pillow at the neck is not comfortable in. This varies in different people as some find it easy to lie on a flat pillow and some on a high pillow. The sleeping position can cause the neck to twist and bend causing strain in the muscles. Jobs like painting ceilings or working with heads bent backward while looking up is also a common cause of this injury.

Apart from these routine activities that people perform taking too much stress or tension can also result in muscle strain that connects the head, neck and shoulders. Numerous of these causes are a result of taking too much pressure on the head.

Injuries Causing This Pain

Several injuries can also result in neck pain like whiplash, falling from heights, sports related incidents, blows on the face or strangulation. These injuries can affect the cervical spine that connects the head and neck to the back. Whiplash is the most common neck injury that results in this pain.

Medical Conditions Causing This Pain

Many people do not know this fact but several medical problems are the common causes of this pain that result in damage running through the neck region. A common medical condition is age. Mostly people suffer from condition of arthritis which results in cervical spondylosis - changes in the bones, joints and discs of the neck. Apart from this narrowing of the spinal canal can also result in a prolonged case of neck pain.

Meningitis and flue also tend to put pressure on the neck and head region. This results in inflammation of tissues around the spinal cord. Other conditions like muscle tightness, rheumatoid arthritis and infection around the neck can also result in sever neck and back pain.

Neck pain causes must be analyzed for successful treatment. Certain tests and x-rays might also be required to know the exact condition of the spine. Injuries require patients to undergo CT scans and MRI scans. These pains and injuries can also result in chronic headaches which can only be cured through oral medications. Neck pain must be taken care or immediately because it can greatly impact the routine life.

Five Ways to Prevent Chronic Back Pain

It is a fact of our health that only the common cold strikes more than chronic back pain. For many of us back pain is caused by simple mechanics of our spine such as a muscle or a joint. While it might be quiet painful, most back problems are not serious and very easily treatable. Sometimes our pain occurs in all age groups, but as we grow older we become less active and pain becomes more evident.

Here are five things you can do to prevent recurring pain or sometimes called chronic back pain.

1. Stay Active. In our bodies, the spine was meant for motion. In fact movement of the spine is required by our bodies for healthy disks. Remember our disks are the so-called "shock absorbers of our vertebrae". Because our spinal disks have no blood supply, movement is required to lubricate these disks. Movement promotes strength and keeps our spine healthy.

2. Eat Healthy. Stay away from processed foods, mainly fatty foods. These foods cause inflammation in our bodies which can lead to pain. Eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to promote a healthy back and overall health.

3. Keep Positive. If chronic back pain occurs, remain positive. Prevent depression and don't think you need to spend days in bed. Inactivity, will only make it worse, you need to move.

4. Lift Properly. You need to take the weight off your back when lifting, especially heavy items. Lift with your knees and legs, bend and cradle the item you are lifting, and listen, don't be afraid to ask for help when lifting a heavy object. Many macho men have hurt their back lifting wrong.

5. See a Chiropractor. Sometimes another condition could be causing your chronic pain. If you experience reoccurring pain then you might need to see a chiropractor. He can readjust your spine and also offer treatment plans to help prevent further problems associated with your back problems.

Sometimes there are more serious conditions causing our back problems. You need to be educated about what causes chronic back pain and how to prevent it. Avoid Back Pain While You Drive

Back pain is common among people that drive for a living. It can be very debilitating. Following a few simple guidelines can help to prevent back pain while driving. First, it is important to make sure that the seat is adjusted correctly for you. It is best to move the seat closer to the steering wheel to make it easier not to slouch and keep the head back over the shoulders.

Keeping the seat forward will also help to prevent straining to reach the pedals. The feet should rest lightly on the pedals. You should keep your shoulders relaxed and bend your elbows comfortably when gripping the steering wheel. It is important to use the headrest which should be positioned just behind the head. This can help to prevent injury if you are in an accident and give the head support while driving. It is also important to use a lumbar support in the small of the back. Many cars come equipped with this.

The vibrations of a moving car can be hard on the back. It is important to make sure that the shock absorbers on the car are in good working order to prevent problems. It is good to stop driving every three to four hours to get out and stretch and moving around for a little while. If you feel back pain coming on while driving, you should get off the road as quick as possible to get out and walk around for a couple minutes.

The seat should be adjusted to an angle of approximately 100 to 110 degrees. If your car is equipped with cruise control, this can also help. While the cruise control is engaged, you can put both feet on the floor to even your weight out.

If you are experiencing back pain, you should bring ice with you. Ice will help to keep inflammation down. You can purchase disposable ice packs at the store to make travelling with ice easier. Alternating ice and heat for 20 minutes may also be helpful. Many cars have a heater built into the seat. Heat can be effective in reducing muscle spasms in the back.

Holding the wheel correctly can also help to avoid problems. It is best to keep the hands positioned at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock when driving for long distances. This allows you to rest your arms to minimize problems in the upper back. These methods that have been explained are simple but effective in reducing and preventing back pain while driving.
